Bungie has turned around. The studio that announced in June it planned to sunset Destiny 2 and follow that with mass layoffs has now committed to bringing back vaulted content from the game’s past. Fans are cheering the reversal, even though the company has not said when the content will go live or whether it will lead to a full sequel.
The material is old, removed years ago, and will need to be built anew to fit the loot shooter’s current standards. The vault move, however, remains the most disputed choice in the game’s nearly 10-year history, and Bungie has walked it back.
Fan Reactions
Social media has reacted quickly and favourably to the change. Fans posted images and short posts marking the shift, including one caption reading, “ð Are we back?”
Fans have made their opinion on the matter plain, and it is that the studio has actually come through on a promise they had once doubted it would fulfill.
What Bungie Has Announced
Bungie’s Project Sunrise team confirmed the studio is “beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all D2 players.”
Bungie has not made a roadmap public yet, and the studio appears to be taking its time with the rollout, which it suggests will extend across several more months. The studio has confirmed it is developing “new stories” within the Destiny universe, though it did not provide any additional details.
Some fans read a LinkedIn bio to mean Destiny 3 is definitely happening. The company’s community manager confirmed the bio was outdated and urged fans to focus on the official video and blog from Poria and Josh. He said more news will come via official announcements.
The concerns from fans fall into three buckets:
- The people who would have led this effort have been laid off by Bungie.
- Some fans are asking whether anyone cut will return to work on it.
- Without them, Bungie is left with a very large question to answer — how the studio will deliver on an undertaking this bold.

The Studio’s Position
Bungie is not prepared to show a roadmap, and the sense is that it won’t start coming out for at least several more months.
The studio has confirmed it will be working on “new stories” in the Destiny universe. A LinkedIn bio that some fans interpreted as a sign of a full sequel was confirmed by the community manager to be outdated. He said fans should instead focus on the official video and blog from Poria and Josh.
The fans who follow Destiny 2 have been told that they can fully indulge their wildest wishes for the game’s future. Whether any of it will actually work, or whether it will make enough money to keep Bungie alive long-term, is anyone’s guess. Those questions will have to wait for another day.
