Charlie Cox to Lead ‘The King’s Ransom’ Play in London

Charlie Cox stars in 'The King's Ransom,' a farce about kidnapping Elvis Presley's corpse for ransom at London's Donmar Warehouse.

A frozen chest containing a corpse lies amid dim stage lighting as actors gather around in a theatrical setting.

Charlie Cox is heading back to the London stage this winter to lead The King’s Ransom, a new play by Stuart Slade premiering at the Donmar Warehouse.

The show follows Vince Black, a small-time crook played by Cox, in 1977 Memphis. According to the play’s synopsis, the scheme is simple: kidnap Elvis Presley’s corpse, stash it in a chest freezer, and collect a million-dollar ransom. “Vince assembles a crack team of misfits and dropouts to attempt the heist of the century,” the synopsis reads.

The Ensemble

Cox’s co-stars include Blake Harrison as Rusty, Tom Fletcher as Charlie, Matthew Flynn as Mr. Bluefield, and Leo Patrick as Jessie Lee. Jenny Rainsford plays Rhonda/Jenny, Christopher Short plays Elvis, and Cherrelle Skeete plays Mike. Ronnie Yorke plays Red, with Ruby Barker, Eira Kay and Trixie Willis sharing the role of Martha.

A Familiar Venue

Cox previously starred in the 2010 production of The Prince of Homburg at the Donmar Warehouse. His other theater credits include the West End revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, which he took to Broadway in 2019.

The Creative Team

Matthew Dunster, who directed 2:22: A Ghost Story and The Hunger Games on Stage, takes charge. The design team includes:

  • Set designer Anna Fleischle
  • Costume designer Jean Chan
  • Lighting designer Sally Ferguson
  • Sound designer Holly Khan
  • Illusion designer Chris Cox
  • Fight and intimacy directors Ruth Cooper-Brown and Rachel Bown-Williams of Rc-Annie
  • Casting director Lotte Hines CDG

Dates and Preview

Preview performances start Dec. 5, with the official opening on Dec. 16. The run continues through Feb. 6, 2027.

What to Watch For

  1. How Cox sells Vince’s desperation — a small-time crook who believes a corpse is his ticket to a fortune.
  2. Whether the ensemble can make the misfits feel distinct rather than interchangeable.
  3. How Dunster handles the transition between comedy and menace — the synopsis is funny, but the threat is real.
  4. Whether the design team finds a way to make a chest freezer look theatrical.
  5. How the rotating Martha role plays out.

Final Word

The King’s Ransom is a play about a man who decides the dead are easier to steal from than the living. It is also a play about the Donmar Warehouse taking a risk on a premise that would sink most productions. Cox’s return to the stage, combined with a cast and creative team of this caliber, makes it a production worth watching.

The premise is absurd, and the production appears to be taking it seriously.
