A digital countdown clock glowing against a backdrop of cryptocurrency symbols.

The Financial Conduct Authority has now opened its authorization process for cryptocurrency companies, with applications due by the end of February 2027. This marks the conclusion of years of waiting for a regulatory framework that has been under development since 2022.

Firms face a narrow time frame. Preparing applications, hiring lawyers and meeting the new standards must all be completed within five months. The FCA’s framework is scheduled to take effect in October 2027, with the application window opening six months before that date.

Who Can Apply

The FCA’s anti-money-laundering regime has already attracted more than 60 registrants, and those companies could benefit from prior work under the current system. Some of the heavy lifting was completed before the new regime came into force, which means the firms already registered may be well positioned to comply with the new rules.

The Edinburgh-based crypto infrastructure platform Zumo secured registration in 2021, and it has constructed a “U.K Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker,” to help firms anticipate the requirements ahead and chart timelines for regulatory milestones.

Jones described building it as a matter of studying the regime rules all the way down to every single individual obligation, connecting each one to the regulated activity it attaches to, and keeping that mapping up to date as additional papers come in.

The Path So Far

The U.K.’s regime for supervising digital asset firms has moved slowly compared to other systems. The EU’s Markets in Crypto Asset (MiCA) Regulation came into force in June 2023, around the same time the U.K.’s relevant Act of Parliament was just becoming law.

The FCA announced its framework would take effect in October 2027, followed by the application window, and things took shape late last year as a result.

What Zumo Built

The tracker was built for companies that want to understand what the new rules mean. Jones explained that constructing it required reading through the entire regulatory framework down to each specific obligation, then linking each obligation to the particular regulated activity it covers, while keeping the whole mapping up to date as additional papers arrive.
