Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive any more expansions until the game’s sequel, Diablo 5, launches in 2029. The studio made the announcement at BlizzCon over the weekend, alongside the surprise reveal of Diablo 5 itself.
The confirmation comes from Diablo game director Brent Gibson, who spoke to PC Gamer about the game’s future. Gibson said the team is focused on seasons for Diablo 4 and on reaching Diablo 5. He framed the decision as a natural endpoint for the current story.
“We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5,” Gibson told PC Gamer. “We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror.”
The End of Hatred Arc
Lord of Hatred was the final chapter of the Story of Hatred arc, which concluded with Mephisto. Many players saw that ending as the end of one arc, not the whole story. Gibson’s statement suggests otherwise: he called the arc complete, and the team is moving on to the Story of Terror.
The events of Diablo 5 take place a century after Diablo 4. It would have been nice to have a major Diablo 4 expansion serve as a narrative lead-in, but the 100-year gap may be large enough to make that difficult. Instead, Blizzard plans to do some of that work through seasonal content.
Seasons Carry the Narrative Load
More story content is coming, but it will arrive through upcoming seasons. Gibson said continuity is a priority, but the team does not have a perfect picture of where it is headed.
“So continuity is something that we’re really excited about, but we don’t necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that’s going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season,” Gibson added.
That means the next few years of Diablo 4 will depend on smaller, rolling updates rather than big, standalone expansions. Fans will need to pay attention to each season to see how the story moves toward the next game.
What Is Coming Next
In the immediate term, Diablo 4’s next season starts tomorrow, 15th September. The Season of Hell’s Legacy is a celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. It brings back Deckard Cain to help players face all three original Prime Evils:
- Diablo
- Baal
- Mephisto
The same day also sees the release of the long-rumoured Switch 2 port, which includes all previously-released content.
The Uncertainty Ahead
The news is disappointing for players who wanted more content before Diablo 5 arrives. A three-year wait without expansions is a long stretch, though the source does not characterize it as such. Players will need to rely on seasons for their next story fix.
The studio’s reasoning is clear. They want to focus on Diablo 4’s existing systems and on building toward the next game. But the move leaves a gap in the middle.
The 100-year jump between games is large enough to justify skipping a bridging expansion. But the promise of seasonal content carrying narrative weight is untested. Gibson said the team does not have a perfect picture of where it is going.
That uncertainty is the crux of the announcement. Blizzard is committing to a path it has not fully mapped out. Players will have to trust the seasons deliver what the expansions once did.
The next few years will test whether seasons can carry the weight of a full story arc. For now, the answer is simple: Diablo 4 is done growing, and the next chapter waits until 2029.
