Blizzard has lifted the curtain on Diablo 5, revealing three classes, a new dark lord, and a procedural world at its Forging the Next Era panel at BlizzCon 2026. The panel ran 45 minutes and covered story, world, gameplay, and itemization, with multiple members of the Diablo team taking the stage to confirm the first details of the game, which is scheduled for a spring 2029 launch.

The biggest reveal was the lineup of playable classes. The Demon Hunter and Monk are returning, but Blizzard is adding a new class: the Plague Knight. The heavily armored fighter spreads disease and then consumes it for power, according to Shely, who said Diablo 5 will launch with more classes than any previous entry.

Shely’s Opening Pitch

Shely set the tone early. “We’re a long way from the campfire, from its comfort and hope. These are the fires of Diablo. Sanctuary has been destroyed, and Diablo has won.”

He said the panel would cover story, world, gameplay, and itemization, and he teased that the game’s setting has changed dramatically. Westmarch, a familiar location from earlier games, has become an outpost of Hell. Few humans have resisted the Lord of Terror, and some have turned against their own kind to become Dread Commanders, drawing power from the Dukes of Hell.

Blizzard also confirmed that terrain will change when players return to certain areas, and procedural worlds are coming back with Diablo 5. Wat explained why that matters. “That idea of not knowing what’s around the corner creates a lot of tension,” she said. “So, in Diablo 5, we’re bringing back the procedural world, both in the dungeons and the overworld. So, if you go back to a region that you’ve been before, all that info knew yesterday – that path that I found, that landmark that I was moving toward, how to fight those Elite monsters – none of that info is going to help me today.”

The Dark Lord Returns

The team spent significant time talking about the villain. Producer Matt Zitterman said Blizzard first had to decide whether to do more DLC or another mainline entry when looking at Diablo 4 and the opportunity to bring back the true Diablo. A proper sequel with Diablo 5 is the only thing that really made sense, he said.

Brandes Hpler, the narrative director, explained the stakes. “He couldn’t just be a final boss. He needs to be a boss that’s shaping this game from its opening moments. That’s how we decided that, this time, you’re not scrambling to shape Sanctuary before Diablo tries to take it over.”

Wat added that the team settled on a straightforward approach to the villain. “Pretty quickly we kept arriving at the same conclusion: Diablo is Diablo. He is the Lord of Terror,” she said. “He’s not redeemable. He’s not misunderstood. That gave us a lot of clarity, so the question now becomes not ‘Is he right?’ but ‘What happens now that he’s won?'”

New Classes and Procedural Worlds

The Plague Knight is not the only new addition. Wat teased Zarg, a new character and a Treasure Goblin that players will grow to know. His name is not final, and his details are still in flux, but he is another sign that Blizzard is shaking things up for its next big installment.

The procedural world system is a major shift. Dungeons and the overworld will change each time a player returns to them, meaning old paths, landmarks, and enemy placements no longer hold value. Wat described the tension that creates. “That idea of not knowing what’s around the corner creates a lot of tension,” she said.

Shely also confirmed that gear-based sets are coming back, and there will be multi-slot items. He compared the itemization system to a city. “Think about New York City; It’s an enormous metropolis, you can immediately go to Time Square and immediately find something cool. That’s kind of how I think about our set up. Once you really start to dig in and master it, you learn where’s the best deli, where’s the best pizza, and you really get into that crunchy opportunity to define your own builds. That’s what we want to do in D5.”

Why Announce Now?

Some fans may worry that announcing a game years before launch means the final product is far from settled. Zitterman addressed that concern directly. He said Blizzard hopes to build the game alongside the community.

Shely also promised solutions for controller players who might be worried about manipulating multi-slot items.

What Comes Next

The game is still very early in development, and many details remain unconfirmed. But the team gave enough concrete information to satisfy both newcomers and die-hard fans.

Detail Status
Spring 2029 launch Confirmed
Three classes confirmed Demon Hunter, Monk, Plague Knight
Procedural worlds Coming back
Multi-slot items Confirmed
Zarg the Treasure Goblin Teased

The panel also showed concept art and gameplay details, giving fans a visual sense of what the game will look like. The team’s confidence in the project was clear throughout the presentation.

The excitement comes from the sheer amount of concrete detail. Three classes, a new dark lord, a procedural world, and a clear itemization vision — that is a lot for a game still years from release. The team’s willingness to share early is a vote of confidence in the community, and it shows Blizzard wants players involved from the beginning.

The next few years will tell whether the vision holds. For now, the fires of Diablo have been lit, and the team is ready to keep building.
