Final Space ran for three seasons and 36 episodes, and it never quite solved the problem at its center: a show this big-hearted kept getting squeezed by a universe that wanted it gone. Created by Olan Rogers and developed with David Sacks, the series premiered on TBS on February 26, 2018, then moved to Adult Swim for its second season on June 24, 2019, and its third and final season on March 20, 2021.

Gary Goodspeed and Mooncake
The premise is simple and a little silly. Gary Goodspeed is an astronaut working off the last days of a five-year sentence aboard the prison spacecraft Galaxy One when he meets a planet-destroying alien he names Mooncake. The two are hunted by the telekinetic Lord Commander, and their quest to save the universe becomes a search for Final Space, the realm where the universe ends — if it exists at all.
Olan Rogers voices Gary and Mooncake. Tom Kenny plays the AI HUE. Tika Sumpter is Quinn and Nightfall. Steven Yeun is Little Cato. Fred Armisen voices KVN, and David Tennant plays the Lord Commander.
Lord Commander’s Pursuit
| Season | Network | Premiere |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | TBS | February 26, 2018 |
| 2 | Adult Swim | June 24, 2019 |
| 3 | Adult Swim | March 20, 2021 |
That shuffle matters. A show that changes home between seasons loses viewers it never gets back, and Final Space was already asking a lot of them.
the series would be written off for taxes
That is Rogers in September 2022, after Adult Swim cancelled the show on September 10, 2021, citing the proposed WarnerMedia and Discovery merger. Netflix pulled it internationally on December 16, 2023, and it lasted in Spain, France, Germany and Belgium only until March 18, 2024.
Final Space: The Final Chapter
A graphic novel, Final Space: The Final Chapter, arrived on May 18, 2026, to finish what television could not. It is a real ending, and a strange one — a story about saving the universe rescued by a book.
The show’s comedy and its grief never sat easily together, and the middle season drags. But the Lord Commander is a genuine menace, and the relationship between Gary and Mooncake carries the whole thing. This is a series cancelled for accounting reasons, not artistic ones. The 7.0/10 is fair: messy, sincere, and worth finishing.
