“Fauda” is the best war drama on television, and it has been for eleven years. Created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, the Israeli series follows Doron Kavillio, a former Mista’arev who returns from retirement to hunt a Hamas militant he thought he had killed. The show premiered on 15 February 2015 and ran through five seasons, finishing its final episode on 13 July 2026.
The premise is simple. Doron learns that Taufiq Hammed, a Hamas terrorist he and his unit were credited for killing, is still alive and plotting a terror attack. He rejoins his old team to eliminate him, setting off a chain of events that reshapes his life and the lives of everyone around him. The last episode of the first season ends with Taufiq’s sidekick Walid killing his mentor. That single act sends the whole series into motion.

Doron’s Long War
Doron is not a hero in the traditional sense. He is a man of violence, a former Mista’arev who operates undercover as an Arab to gather intelligence. He is married to Gali, played by Netta Garti.
His decision to return to the field tears everything apart. The show tracks the fallout across every season, and it never lets the audience forget that the people Doron hurts are not just targets on a battlefield.
Walid’s Revenge
Walid becomes the main antagonist of the second season. He has risen to become the head of the military wing of Hamas in the West Bank. His goal is simple: take revenge on Doron for killing his mentor.
The second season also introduces Nidal Awadallah, the son of the Sheikh killed in the first season. Nidal is an operative in the Islamic State organization who has returned from Syria. He adopts the Mista’arvim’s tactics, posing as Israeli personnel to get close to Doron. The fight becomes personal. It is no longer about stopping a terror attack. It is about hurting the other man’s family.
The Third Season Shift
The third season shifts to Hebron, where Doron resumes his undercover work as Abu Fadi, a boxing instructor. He trains Bashar, a young aspiring Palestinian boxer whose father, Jihad Hamdan, was imprisoned for 20 years for his involvement with a Palestinian terrorist cell.
Bashar’s cousin Fauzi is smuggling weapons to Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Doron’s cover is compromised in the process, and the season follows the fallout as the family is drawn into a plot they never expected.
Casting Choices
The show has always been committed to authenticity. In December 2024, the production instructed casting agents not to propose Jewish actors for roles portraying Arab characters in the fifth season.
The cast reflects that commitment. Hisham Suliman plays Abu Ahmad, the militant Doron hunts in the first season. Walid is played by Shadi Mar’i. Nidal is played by Firas Nassar. The show’s willingness to cast actors who actually look like the people they represent is a constant strength.
The cast also performs their own stunts and receives training in firearms, Krav Maga and kickboxing. Rona-Lee Shimon described the physical demands of the role. Laëtitia Eïdo, who plays Shirin Al Abed, worked with an Arabic language instructor because she lacked proficiency in the language. Boaz Konforty drew upon his IDF military service experience while playing Avihai, a sniper in Doron’s squad.
The Final Stretch
The fourth season expanded the world to Brussels, Syria and Lebanon. It brought in new cast members including Inbar Lavi, Mark Ivanir, Amir Boutrous, Lucy Ayoub and Loai Noufi. The fifth season was filmed in 2025 and released on 18 May 2026.
In October 2025, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the series would be made into a cinema film. Neither Raz nor Issacharoff confirmed this. In September 2026, Issacharoff said a film was “in the works.”
