Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says a thorough, asset-by-asset playthrough of the upcoming RPG finale could easily take over 100 hours to beat. Hamaguchi spoke with GameSpot about the scope of the final chapter in the remake trilogy.
Playthrough Runs by the Director
Hamaguchi is already an expert in the matter. He has completed a whopping 46 full playthroughs of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation ahead of the April 2027 release.
“I will try to do these playthroughs as much time as time allows,” he said. “Yesterday, during a separate round of interviews, when there was downtime, I actually did bring a PS5 controller, so I checked the latest version of the build.”
He added that he checks the latest build even on business trips, whenever he finds a small window of time.
The Highwind and Its Mini-Games
Players will use a giant airship called the Highwind to travel through the game’s world. Along the way, they will find more mini-games, battles, and areas to explore.
Hamaguchi noted that the game is packed with content. He said he is well aware of the amount of material available, even as he keeps returning to the game.
A Very Full Playthrough
Hamaguchi’s own standard playthrough involves skipping combat whenever he can.
“As the director, I don’t have enough time for that, so sometimes I would just skip combat and focus on checking the main story,” he said.
“In a standard playthrough from beginning to end, if I were to review and check every single asset and element in the game, it’ll easily take over a hundred hours.”
The 100-Hour Estimate
Hamaguchi’s estimate of 100 hours is based on a thorough, asset-by-asset inspection of the game. He himself skips combat in his own check runs. The breakdown of the estimate goes like this:
- A standard playthrough, checking every asset and element, runs over 100 hours.
- Hamaguchi’s own director playthroughs skip combat to stay under that time.
- The director’s 46 full runs show how deeply he has studied the game.
A Heavy Download
Hamaguchi recently told VGC that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could eat around 200GB of storage.
The Takeaway
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches April 8, 2027. IGN recently went hands-on for a preview, and the director’s own dedication is a statement about how much Square Enix has packed into this finale.
Some players will turn over every pixel on the planet. Others will surely beeline their way through the story. Both approaches are valid, and the game appears built to accommodate both.
