Citizen Sleeper drops players on a broken space station, playing an artificial worker running out of time. The game is out now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch. It earns its praise through quiet, careful design rather than spectacle.

The Station and Its People
The station is full of factions, drifters and stranded workers, each with their own plans. The player’s character, a Sleeper, has fled a company that still owns the rights to their body. Every cycle brings a fresh roll of dice, spent on jobs, repairs or conversations that shift the station’s balance of power.
The writing carries the weight here. A handful of characters, a scrap dealer among them, carry small, personal stories that build slowly across many cycles.
Dice and Decay
The core system ties dice rolls to a decaying body that needs upkeep and medicine to keep working. Higher rolls open safer paths; lower rolls risk failure or injury. That strain gives every choice weight, since a bad roll can close off a storyline for cycles at a time.
The game never punishes failure outright. Instead it folds losses into the story, letting a failed job become a new thread rather than a dead end.
Cycles and Pacing
Progress comes in cycles, not levels. Each cycle starts over the dice pool and nudges the station’s clock forward, and players choose how to spend limited actions among factions, repairs and personal errands.
That structure rewards patience.
The pace can feel slow early on, before the station’s politics and characters fall into place. Once they do, small decisions start to carry real weight, and the game’s stripped-back presentation, all text and plain illustration, stops feeling like a limitation.
Sound and Style
The soundtrack, built from soft synths, strengthens the isolation of the station without overwhelming the text. Character portraits are simple and still, letting dialogue carry feeling instead of animation.
Citizen Sleeper doesn’t chase spectacle. It trusts its systems and its cast to hold attention over dozens of cycles.
Citizen Sleeper by the Numbers
- Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
- Setting: a broken space station
- Core system: dice-based action and decay
- Critical score: 8.2 of 10
Citizen Sleeper succeeds by keeping its focus narrow: one station, one body running down, a handful of lives tangled together. The dice system turns every choice into a small gamble with real stakes, and the writing gives those gambles meaning. It’s a game built on patience and consequence rather than action, and it delivers on both.
