The bout between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will finally take place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on 11 December. The fight, which has been years in the making, was first announced over a decade ago. It will be broadcast live on Netflix for viewers across the globe.
The bout was announced on Wednesday, 30 September, ahead of a news conference in London where the two fighters will face each other publicly for the first time. The main event could take place in the early hours of Saturday morning in the UK, with organisers considering a late start to suit audiences in the United States.
The Long Road to Cardiff
Joshua and Fury had already signed contracts for the fight earlier this year, but the date and venue had yet to be confirmed. London’s Wembley Stadium and New York’s Madison Square Garden were the frontrunners, but both presented issues before Cardiff emerged as an alternative.
The Principality Stadium has hosted late-night boxing before. Joe Calzaghe’s fight with Mikkel Kessler in November 2007 began at 01:00 GMT, and Welshman Calzaghe’s unification fight against Jeff Lacy at Manchester’s MEN Arena in 2005 also started late.
The Promotional Team Behind the Fight
Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring is teaming up with UFC chief Dana White for the event. Alalshikh spoke warmly about the pairing.
- “Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together,” Alalshikh said.
- “This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans.”
Given White’s position at Zuffa Boxing, his participation stands out, and he spoke about the event himself.
“For more than a decade, boxing fans have been clamouring for the heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Together, they bring 66 wins, 52 knockouts and multiple heavyweight world titles into the ring,” White said.
“On December 11, two of the biggest heavyweights of this generation finally collide – and the winner will take a significant place in heavyweight history.”
What the Fighters Have Said So Far
Joshua, 36, posted on Instagram after the announcement.
“I am inspiring a generation,” he wrote.
Fury, 38, has not yet commented publicly on the news.
The Timing Question
A late-night start in Cardiff means the fight would begin around 01:00 or 02:00 GMT. That places the action at 20:00 or 21:00 on the US east coast.
Ricky Hatton’s career-defining victory over Kostya Tszyu at Manchester’s MEN Arena in June 2005 began at about 02:00 local time, allowing US broadcaster Showtime to show the fight on Saturday evening.
Mixed martial arts has gone even later. Michael Bisping’s UFC title defence against Dan Henderson in Manchester in 2016 began deep into the night, with the fighters making their way to the octagon at about 04:45 local time.
Manchester hosted a return visit from the UFC in 2024, and when the UFC 304 main card got underway at 03:00 BST, it matched the usual 22:00 opening time for an event on the US east coast.
Eddie Hearn has dismissed talk of the bout starting as late as 03:00 GMT. A walk to the centre of the ring at either 01:00 or 02:00 GMT would put the contest at 20:00 or 21:00 on the US east coast.
Why Cardiff Won Out
Officials from the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Council have endorsed the contest, arguing that hosting it will strengthen the city’s standing as a venue for important gatherings and potentially deliver a notable economic gain. Certain operational arrangements remain to be settled.
The push to hold the fight in the UK was led by Joshua, and he has finally secured what he wanted.
“Forever indebted to the UK public for their support of Anthony Joshua. We couldn’t have got this over the line without you,” Hearn said.
