Xbox’s October is shaping up to be its busiest month of the year. Five new games are landing across the month, and two of them are big enough to carry the whole slate. The company has had a rough year, with layoffs and studio exits leaving its future unclear. Project Helix remains the long-term plan, but October needs to prove that the platform still has hits.

The headline act is Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that takes the series back to the very beginning of Emergence Day. It arrives Oct. 6 alongside Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Then Oct. 8 brings Echo Weaver to Xbox Game Pass, followed by Valor Mortis on Oct. 13 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Oct. 23.

Gears of War: E-Day

E-Day is a prequel that shows how Emergence Day unfolded. It keeps the series’ trademark violence and monster fights, with a Horde mode included. The preview material suggests it stays faithful to the formula that made the series a staple of Xbox’s catalog.

“It’s still the same testosterone-fueled action romp, complete with a thrilling Horde mode.”

Star Wars: Galactic Racer

Galactic Racer applies the fundamentals of Burnout to the Star Wars universe. Players crash in slow motion while racing at high speed. The demo shown at Summer Game Fest suggested a tight, exciting racer that uses Star Wars’ junky vehicles well. Its roguelike campaign is described as innovative, which could change how solo racing games handle content.

Echo Weaver

Echo Weaver is a Metroidvania where you manipulate time to progress through its 2D world. You have every power you need from the start, but figuring out which ones to use is the puzzle. Xbox has promoted it heavily for years as a promising indie coming to Game Pass.

Valor Mortis

Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike from the developers of Ghostrunner. You play as a dead soldier from Napoleon’s army, brought back to life to fight a plague spreading across Europe. The setting is a grotesque vision of the 19th century, and the developer’s pedigree suggests it should be a bloody good time.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 follows a South Korean soldier protecting his home from an invasion. The big news is the return of DMZ, the extraction shooter mode from Modern Warfare 2. After a few years of mixed releases, DMZ could reenergize the series’ audience, especially after how popular Arc Raiders was in 2025.

Game Release Date

What October Needs to Prove

Microsoft has had a rough year. The layoffs and studio departures have made the future of its gaming brand unclear. October has become a crucial month for Xbox. Two major first-party releases, plus a slew of promising Xbox Game Pass additions, will need to impress players enough to keep looking forward to Project Helix.

The month is packed, and the stakes are high. Xbox has to show that its biggest franchises still matter and that its smaller indies deserve attention. The games are all arriving at a steady clip, so there is room to try everything.
