GTA 6 Devs Explain Why Conspiracy-Theories Beat Internet Jokes: ‘Our Own Slanted, Overblown Versions’

Rockstar's Rupert Humphries explains why GTA 6 leans on conspiracy theories rather than chasing fleeting internet memes.

A group of people stand in a neon-lit street holding posters amid a hazy, moody atmosphere.

Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, has explained why GTA 6 leans on conspiracy theories instead of chasing the latest internet joke. The answer comes down to timing: games take years to build, and memes have a shelf life measured in months.

Speaking to Love Magazine, Humphries said the team worked on GTA 6 “for years and years.” That means the game has to feel current when it finally ships. “If there’s a trend blowing up for six months, you need to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon,” he said.

Why Memes Don’t Work For A Decade Of Development

South Park can drop a whole episode on demonic Labubus and move on before the joke cools. GTA 6 cannot do the same. Instead of swapping out its tech for paper cutouts, the team avoids trends entirely.

“Things that interested us, like conspiracy theories,” Humphries said. “The strange ways the public reacts to everyday occurrences, and those are the kinds of things we ran with.” The approach is simple: rather than copying something real from the world, the studio creates its own exaggerated versions. “In most cases, rather than trying to put a like-for-like of something real in the world, we have created our own slanted, overblown versions, be that a conspiracy theory, or another universal contemporary phenomenon.”

The American Dream Through Four Games

GTA has long used satire to tackle serious subjects, and the American Dream is one of them. GTA 4, Humphries said, was “a kind of hollow commentary on the illusion of America as a land of opportunity.” GTA 5 doubled down on that cynicism.

Today’s version is more modest, he suggested. “Maybe the American Dream is more modest now,” he said. “It’s a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success – but maybe today, that is just out of reach for the average person.”

Miami and Southern Florida sit at the center of this tension. “A particular frontline for this battle between astronomical wealth and unbounded ambition, creating a pressure cooker for all kinds of insanity,” Humphries said.

What The Satire Actually Means

Humphries stopped short of explaining GTA 6’s specific take on the American Dream. But his interpretation offers a clue about the main characters. Jason and Lucia may not be chasing bottomless pools of cash like the protagonists before them.

The game’s conspiracy-theory satire was chosen precisely because it would not expire by launch day. That honesty is oddly charming.

The Launch Date

GTA 6 launches next month on November 19th. It is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Key Facts Box

  • GTA 6 launches November 19th
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S
  • Senior vice president of narrative: Rupert Humphries

What To Watch For

  1. How the conspiracy theories play out in the game
  2. Whether Jason and Lucia’s motivations match Humphries’ hints
  3. Whether the satire feels current on launch day

Humphries’ admission is refreshing. Most developers talk about staying relevant. Few admit that staying relevant means avoiding the very thing that would make them relevant tomorrow.

The game’s approach is a bet that overblown satire lasts longer than a meme. Whether it pays off is a question for November 19th.
