GTA Online Will Keep Running After GTA 6 Launch, Take-Two Confirms

GTA Online gets Take-Two's promise of continued support beyond GTA 6's launch, with PC becoming more important.

Take-Two has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto Online will keep getting support after Grand Theft Auto 6 launches this November. The confirmation came during a shareholders meeting, where the company said it would “continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond.”

That single line carries a lot of weight. GTA 6 is a single-player-only game, which means there will be no multiplayer mode when it ships. If you want to play online, you will need to stick with the current version of GTA Online. That is the setup Take-Two is committing to, at least for now.

What the Confirmation Actually Says

The statement from Take-Two is simple: the company will keep supporting GTA Online after GTA 6 launches. It does not say when the next version of the game will arrive, or how it will be packaged. It simply promises that the service will keep running.

That is notable because the industry has a history of letting online services die once a new main game ships. GTA Online has been a steady revenue machine for years, and Take-Two’s commitment suggests it wants that to continue.

Twitch Boss Dan Clancy’s Prediction

Dan Clancy, the boss of Twitch, has his own view on the timing. He told Bloomberg that he has spoken with Rockstar about their plans, and he expects the multiplayer version of GTA 6 to arrive in 2027.

“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy said. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

Clancy’s prediction matches the pattern of previous GTA releases, where online modes arrived well after the main game shipped.

The PC Question

The shareholders meeting also touched on PC. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was asked about whether the company’s PC plans had been affected by console shortages, particularly the PS5 Pro. His response was deliberately vague.

“The strategy of the company is, over time, generally speaking, to launch for any platforms for which there’s a meaningful audience,” Zelnick replied. “But that isn’t always the case, and certainly, if platforms were no longer viable, we could change that strategy.”

“And I would note that the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time.”

Why Rockstar Skips PC at Launch

The PC question has a longer history than the current console shortage. John Ricchio, a former Rockstar producer, explained earlier this year why the studio skips PC at launch.

“It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend,” Ricchio said. “Because shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room? Cool, we can deoptimize or make things more shiny.'”

That approach makes sense for a studio that wants to optimize for consoles first. The risk is that players who want to play on PC have to wait for a separate release. Whether that happens for GTA 6 is still unknown.

The Album Announcement

The day Take-Two confirmed the GTA Online support, Rockstar also announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album. The soundtrack releases alongside the game on November 19 and features over 30 original songs from major mainstream artists. Six original songs from artists like Travis Scott, PinkPantheress, and Morgan Wallen are available to stream on Spotify right now.

The album announcement is a bonus, but it is not the main story. The main story is the commitment to keep GTA Online running.

What Comes Next

The key questions remain unanswered. Will the next version of GTA Online be bundled with GTA 6, or will it be a separate purchase? Will a PC version of GTA 6 follow later, and if so, how long will players have to wait?

Take-Two has promised support for GTA Online “after GTA 6 release and beyond.” That promise does not answer any of those questions, but it does signal that Rockstar is treating the online game as a long-term investment rather than a disposable feature.

For now, players who want to keep playing GTA Online have a clear path. The current version stays alive, and Take-Two has committed to keeping it supported. Whether that support extends to a new version or a PC release is a question for later.

The album announcement is a nice bonus, but it is not the main story. The main story is the commitment to keep GTA Online running.

Order of Events
1. Take-Two confirms GTA Online support “after GTA 6 release and beyond” at shareholders meeting

The takeaway is simple: GTA Online is not dying anytime soon. Take-Two is betting on it, and the company’s public statements make that clear. The next version of the game will come eventually, but nobody knows when. For now, the current servers are staying open, and that is the most important fact of all.
