GTA VI shows off its biggest map yet, with hurricanes, fast travel and 170+ animal species

GTA VI's Leonida map is nearly twice the size of GTA V, packed with hurricanes, ride-share fast travel, and 170+ animal species.

Game Informer’s coverage, reported by IGN, reveals that Rockstar Games has shown off Grand Theft Auto VI, and the scale is enormous. GTA VI takes place across Los Santos and Blaine County’s map is roughly twice the size of GTA V’, which means there is plenty of ground for players to cover. The game appears larger, wetter, and more packed with people than any title the studio has put out before.

Leonida isn’t merely a bigger canvas for Rockstar North’s co-studio head Aaron Garbut and his team to paint upon. The ambition runs deeper, toward density — more enterable interiors, rooftops, alleys, and hand-crafted spaces designed to give the new world a sense of continuity, so it feels like one joined realm instead of a series of separate places. Six regions compose the whole.

  1. Vice City
  2. Leonida Keys
  3. Grassrivers
  4. Port Gellhorn
  5. Ambrosia
  6. Mount Kalaga National Park

Distinct identities characterize each region. The Ambrosia district, for instance, is home to factories, refineries, and a biker gang that rules the territory.

Hurricanes and Persistent Weather

Rockstar has upgraded the weather system with localised and lasting conditions, allowing a storm to approach from a distance even as you remain in bright sunshine elsewhere on the map. Once rain subsides, it leaves behind visible evidence, including standing water, wet surfaces on buildings, and runoff from rooftops.

The wind works upon the world in several ways: it raises ripples upon the water, carries along bits of refuse, and stirs the hair of those who walk beneath it. Rockstar has confirmed the presence of rainbows within the game, which gives Leonida an amount of environmental detail that rises far above a simple day-and-night cycle. This is not merely a change in appearance — the weather reacts to where you stand and what you do.

Ride-Sharing as Fast Travel

Ride-share vehicles have arrived on the map, letting players hail them for travel. A private journey is not guaranteed, however. Other passengers may climb into the same vehicle, opening up chances for casual talk and character development during the trip.

The ride-share system also ties into the game’s social satire. Jason and Lucia can spend the time scrolling Snapmatic, GTA’s parody version of Instagram. They will not be able to post themselves, though, as their position as fugitives makes public social-media activity too risky. That restriction fits the story, but it also limits what players can do with the mechanic.

Over 170 Animal Species

Leonida’s wildlife is one of the game’s largest systemic additions. Rockstar says GTA VI includes more than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird types, more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles across the state’s urban, rural, wetland, inland, and ocean environments.

The water will be home to sharks, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays, each with its own distinct manner of moving. One can meet these creatures face to face through scuba diving. Animal tracking and rare animal types are coming back, much like what was found in Red Dead Redemption 2. A screenshot reportedly showing Jason approaching deer with a rifle hints that hunting may hold a greater place than it did in GTA V.

Side Activities Beyond Missions

Beyond missions and criminal pursuits, Rockstar is adding a wide array of optional activities for players to take part in when they want a break from the main story. Among the confirmed pastimes are base jumping, billiards, gym visits, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoo visits, air boating, and jet skiing. This collection shows a game designed to give players plenty to do even when they’re not causing trouble.

This list feels like a playground unto itself, and it is. Every entry piles on a level of depth that GTA V never offered. Whether you choose to hit the links or chase a biker gang across a factory district, the game appears built to let you do it.

Robberies, Car Theft, and Police Chases

GTA keeps crime at its core, though Rockstar appears to be handing players more freedom over how they carry it out. Heists can now be attempted solo or with both characters, and players can pick between a quiet approach or a loud one, with their decision shaping how strongly police react. The two leads can opt to run away together or go their separate ways, though the game ends if either of them gets swamped by officers.

The theft of cars is also spreading. Luxury vehicles often need specific tools to be taken and might come equipped with tracking devices or protection systems. According to reports, players can employ an app known as WAiNK to examine a car’s second-hand worth, its security features, and how much it would cost to personalise before choosing whether to hold onto it or sell it via a fence.

The Relationship Between Jason and Lucia

Jason and Lucia’s bond isn’t set in stone. Players get to shape whether their connection stays platonic or grows romantic by taking Lucia on dates, calling her, messaging her, and through smaller moments like holding hands or opening doors for her. These choices won’t just affect the two of them. Rockstar has confirmed that decisions, both large and small, can change story outcomes, which means there are good reasons to play through the game again to see different paths unfold.

The game takes a bold step away from how its predecessors handled their leads. Rather than keeping the main characters at a distance, it now lets players guide the romance, letting the story bend to their choices. This marks a clear break from the set paths that defined earlier entries in the series.

GTA VI’s Ambition

Rockstar seems intent on making Grand Theft Auto VI a significant step up for the series, with a sprawling map, a rebuilt weather system, a wide range of distinct NPCs, extensive customisation options, and an abundance of open-world activities. The studio has admitted the vast demands placed upon the game and claims its goal is to “overdeliver” across scope, density, interaction, and detail.

The latest details point toward Rockstar’s biggest Playground yet with Leonida. The hurricane system, ride-share fast travel, and 170+ animal species all appear to be real new features, and the “overdeliver” ambition is funny coming from a company that already sets the bar high.

Practical tests are what matter now for the stated ambition. Promising a larger map is simple enough, yet building a denser, more responsive world demands genuine effort. The studio has demonstrated the individual elements, but the true measure will only be seen once players actually use the controller.

Work on the game is ongoing, and more information will keep coming out. Right now, things look good. GTA VI is setting higher hopes, and Rockstar appears prepared to live up to them.
