Honor’s new Magic 9 Pro Max has arrived, and it is the first smartphone to carry a camera built with the help of ARRI, the company behind some of Hollywood’s most famous movie cameras. The partnership puts professional cinema technology directly into a consumer phone, and the specs back that up.
The camera system was developed in collaboration with ARRI, the professional cinema camera company known for its work on major motion pictures. ARRI contributed image science and camera expertise to help Honor build the device. The partnership extends to the software side too, with 14 ARRI filter presets, 4K 60fps “Cinema Grade” recording, 10-bit color depth, and ARRI Wide Gamut 3 support.
The Camera Specs
The main camera is a 200 MP shooter with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and an f/1.57 aperture. There is a second 200 MP telephoto camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor and an f/2.6 aperture. A 50 MP ultra-wide lens with an f/2.0 aperture rounds out the trio, alongside a 55 MP selfie camera.
For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max tops out at 48 MP across all three of its rear cameras. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra comes closest with its 200 MP main camera, but the phones differ beyond megapixel count.
Stabilization and Sound
The main camera carries optical image stabilization rated to the Camera & Imaging Products Association’s CIPA 8.0 standard. It also has 3-degree gimbal-level stabilization, which lets the camera move and tilt by up to 3 degrees.
Honor also claims the Magic 9 Pro Max is the first smartphone with a “cinema-grade” directional microphone. The company says it can pick up sound from up to 20 meters away and includes audio recording presets to help users capture the sounds they want while reducing noise from the surroundings.

Why This Matters
The partnership with ARRI is the headline, but the hardware itself is the proof. A 200 MP main camera and a 200 MP telephoto camera are rare in any phone, and having both on one device is unusual. The gimbal stabilization is a genuine feature rather than marketing noise.
The directional microphone is a separate step forward. A phone that can record audio from 20 meters away opens up a whole range of shooting situations.
The Bottom Line
The Magic 9 Pro Max is not a small step forward. It is a statement phone aimed at people who care deeply about what their camera can do.
There is a catch, though. Honor’s devices are not officially sold in the U.S., so anyone wanting one has to go through third parties and import it themselves.
The phone launches today in China. For now, it is a device that exists primarily for people outside the U.S. who are willing to jump through the import hoops.
