Disney’s new witch-centric teen drama Coven Academy finally has a premiere date, and the cast celebrated with tarot readings, crystals and a themed dinner at the historic Ennis House in Los Angeles. The event brought together Malina Pauli Weissman, Swayam Bhatia, Louis Thresher and the rest of the ensemble for a night that felt less like a red carpet and more like a magical gathering.
The series premieres Oct. 1 on Freeform, with next-day streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. That means witches and magic fans across three platforms will be able to catch up with the show soon after its first broadcast. The cast and creator Tim Federle spoke with On The Red Carpet about the project, and their excitement is palpable.
Briar and Sasha Lead the Academy
Pauli Weissman plays Briar, the main character and a young, headstrong witch who must learn how to master her powers alongside her magical peers. Her enthusiasm is front and center.
“I can’t even believe that people are going to be able to watch it, so I am just so jittery and excited to see what people have to say.”
Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha, one of Briar’s best friends. She described the night as a convening ceremony.
“It feels like we’re all at our own little convening ceremony right now,” she said.
Louis Thresher plays Ollie, a character with a secret or two, and one of Briar’s two love interests alongside Malachi Barton’s character, Jake. Thresher captured the moment’s significance.
“It feels very full circle and exciting that we’re like, here and it’s like, we’ve done this whole thing.”
McKenna and Tegan Round Out the Core Group
Swayam Bhatia plays McKenna, another witch at the Academy. She is currently in the middle of the “Worlds Collide Concert Tour,” performing alongside her “ZOMBIES,” “Descendants” and “Camp Rock” co-stars. Despite the demanding schedule, she made time for the celebration.
“This show has meant the world to us,” she said. “It is such a step in Disney culture, and I’m so honored to be a part of it. I’m honored to be playing a witch and honored to be working with Tim Federle, who’s a filmmaker that I’ve looked up to for years.”
Ora Duplass plays Briar’s other best friend, Tegan. She spoke warmly about Federle’s role in the project.
“He is the show,” she said. “When I think of the show, it’s him. It all stemmed from him. And little parts of the show stemmed from his life. And to be able to bring that to the screen with him and for him was just so amazing. And he’s such like, a dad. He’s always looking out for us. It’s just, it’s great, especially for me, like just getting into the business. It was awesome to have him.”
The Faculty and the Creator Behind It
Devon Sawa and Tiffani Thiessen join the cast as Coven Academy faculty members Mr. Cole and Miss Graves. Sawa reflected on the show’s journey.
“It started off as this little thing, and it grew, and it grew, and it grew, and I’ve seen it, and it’s just a phenomenal little TV show,” he said.
Thiessen echoed his sentiment and addressed the audience directly.
“We’re all very, very excited for you guys to see the show. I know my kids are excited like, we’re super stoked.”
Tim Federle created the series. He is also the creator behind Disney+’s “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” and the director of the upcoming “Romy and Michele 2.” His influence runs through the show, according to the cast.
A Party Fit for Witches
The celebration took place at the Ennis House in Los Angeles. The event included tarot card readings and crystals, which fit the magical theme of the show. It was a night designed to feel like the show itself, with the cast gathered to mark the moment before audiences see the finished product.
The Walt Disney Company owns Freeform, Disney+, Hulu and this ABC station, making Coven Academy a family affair across multiple platforms.
What the Premiere Means for Fans
Oct. 1 is a busy night for witches. The show premieres on Freeform, and the next-day streaming rollout means viewers on Disney+ and Hulu will have access soon after. For a show built around witches mastering their powers, the simultaneous release strategy gives fans multiple paths to the same content.
The cast’s enthusiasm is contagious. They have been waiting for this moment, and now they are ready for audiences to judge.
