It’s Not Even Out Yet, but Valve’s Deadlock Just Hit Its Biggest Concurrent Player Count on Steam

Valve's Deadlock hits 228,086 players on Steam before release, thanks to the City Never Sleeps update.

A neon-lit New York-inspired arena glows with color as heroes battle in a MOBA.

Valve’s new MOBA Deadlock isn’t even fully released yet, and it hasn’t been open to the public for a proper download. But that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the most played games on Steam. Yesterday, the game reached 228,086 concurrent players according to SteamDB, the largest figure in its history.

The City Never Sleeps Update

Valve released the City Never Sleeps update for Deadlock yesterday. It was a huge package, and it arrived while the game is still missing a release date. The update did several things at once, and each of them was substantial enough to justify a return trip on its own.

  • It overhauled the entire map, turning it into a New York-inspired city called The Cursed Apple.
  • It added six new heroes to the roster.
  • It doubled the number of character interaction lines, adding fresh voice work throughout.
  • It brought HUD and quality-of-life improvements across the board.

The result was immediate. Players who already had access flew back into the game, and it climbed the Steam rankings fast. By the end of the day, it sat near the top of the most-played list.

Why Players Are Flying Back In

The new voice lines seem to be doing most of the heavy lifting. The Deadlock subreddit is full of player-curated highlights, with fans pointing to the new dialogue as a major draw. Characters that were previously flat now have more personality, and players are clearly happy about it.

The map overhaul helps too. The central blue lane is now Broadway, the green lane is Greenwich, and the yellow lane is York. Smaller districts sit between the lanes, named after familiar New York landmarks like the Theatre, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot, and the Plaza. Each lane and district carries its own PvE enemies, fitting the theme.

You can see the whole thing for yourself on the Deadlock website. The visual design is ambitious and impressive.

What Deadlock Actually Is

Deadlock is a MOBA. Valve describes it as a mix between Dota and Overwatch. That combination is unusual, and it explains some of the interest.

The game is currently invite-only. If you want to play Deadlock, you need to find someone with access who can gift you an invite code. That means the player base is artificially limited, which makes the concurrent player count even more striking. Not everyone can jump in, yet enough people with access chose to anyway.

How the Numbers Compare

Feature City Never Sleeps Update
New heroes Six
Voice lines More than doubled
Map changes Overhauled entirely
Player count 228,086 concurrent

The numbers paint a picture of a game that is still in development but has captured attention. The update was substantial enough that players felt it was worth returning to, even though the game remains gated behind an access system.

The Record Stands

Valve has not given Deadlock a release date yet. The game is still gated behind an access system, and the City Never Sleeps update was a significant step forward. The fact that players responded so strongly suggests the game has a built-in audience that wants to see it finished.

For now, the best way to play is to get an invite code from someone who already has access. That means the player base will continue to grow slowly, through social connections rather than a store page.

The game’s momentum is real, and it has already set a new high mark for concurrent players. Whether that translates into a full release is another question. For now, the record stands, and the game remains one of the most played titles on Steam, even though it is not even out yet.
