James Gunn Assembles a Team of Monsters for HBO Max’s Creature Commandos

James Gunn's animated monster team Creature Commandos is a lean, confident comedy-drama with real stakes.

A group of monstrous creatures stand together in tactical gear, ready for a mission.

Creature Commandos is a secret team of monsters, and James Gunn knows exactly what to do with them. The series, created for HBO Max, follows a black ops unit assembled by Amanda Waller from incarcerated monsters — creatures humans can’t handle, so they get the worst jobs. It’s the first entry in the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and it lands as a lean, confident animated comedy-drama with real stakes.

The Team and the Voice Cast

The cast is the engine. Indira Varma voices The Bride, Sean Gunn plays GI Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk is Doctor Phosphorus, Zoë Chao is Nina Mazursky, David Harbour is Frankenstein, and Frank Grillo is Rick Flag Sr. The show also confirmed Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, reprising her role from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Gunn and Peter Safran cast with an eye toward live-action crossover potential, scheduling actors to record together whenever their schedules allowed.

The Set-Up

The premise is simple. After the events of the first season of Peacemaker, Amanda Waller assembles a black ops team of monsters led by General Rick Flag Sr. Gunn wrote all seven episodes of the first season, with Dean Lorey serving as showrunner and Yves “Balak” Bigerel as supervising director. Bobbypills and Studio IAM provided animation.

Gunn’s Writing and the Voice Acting

Gunn’s writing carries the show. The dialogue is sharp, the jokes land, and the emotional weight is real. The voice acting is uniformly strong. Gunn served as voice director for the main actors, and the cast recorded together in person, “fangirling” each other, so the energy between them feels real.

The DCU Chapter One

Creature Commandos is the first installment in DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which is described as the beginning of a new era for the company’s animated output. The series premiered on Max on December 5, 2024, with its first two episodes, and it was renewed for a second season by December of that year.

What Works and What Doesn’t

The show doesn’t overstay its welcome. At eight episodes across two seasons, it moves fast and stays tight. The humor is pointed, the action is kinetic, and the emotional beats land without over-explaining. The creatures themselves are the draw — monstrous, funny, and fully realized.

A few moments stand out:

  • The interplay between Weasel and GI Robot
  • David Harbour’s Frankenstein, Gunn’s first choice for the role
  • The dynamic between Nina Mazursky and The Bride
  • The emotional weight of the final episodes

Verdict

Creature Commandos is a confident, often brilliant start to the DCU’s animated slate. The writing is sharp, the voice acting is superb, and the premise is fresh. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to — it knows exactly what it is and delivers on every promise.
