Jefferson White is heading back to the American West, and this time he’s doing it on CBS. The actor who spent five seasons as ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom on Yellowstone is returning to the role for Season 2 of the spin-off Marshals, TVLine reports.

The news comes with a first look at White in his new gig, plus a statement from the actor himself. “I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West,” White says. “The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.”

White’s Long Run On Yellowstone

More than 40 episodes of Yellowstone featured White as Jimmy Hurdstrom, which counts him among the rare actors who showed up in both the 2018 series premiere and the 2024 series finale. His time with the show spanned all five seasons on Paramount Network.

White built his resume with recurring TV roles before Yellowstone, including memorable parts on NBC’s Chicago P.D. and Blindspot, Netflix’s House of Cards and ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, and FX’s The Americans. After the show, he appeared as a guest star on CBS’ Blue Bloods and NBC’s The Hunting Party, and also recurred during the final season of Netflix’s YOU.

“I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West.”

The Character’s Rocky Start

A brief description of Jimmy calls him a “good-hearted yet rough-around-the-edges ranch hand who evolved from a troubled criminal into a resilient, proud cowboy.”, which underplays a character whose story stretches across several seasons of Yellowstone. CBS offers that portrait, and it is accurate, though it barely scratches the surface.

His grandfather feared Jimmy would end up in a life of crime, so he approached John Dutton (Kevin Costner) for help. He asked Dutton to take Jimmy under his wing, and the offer came with conditions. Rip (Cole Hauser) made Jimmy an ultimatum — accept the brand or face the authorities. Jimmy chose the brand.

Jimmy had a hard beginning at Yellowstone. His passion for rodeo grew there, along with his feelings for Mia, a barrel racer played by Eden Brolin. Yet his rodeo career kept ending in serious harm, so John shipped him off to Texas to study the genuine cowboy way at the 6666 Ranch.

Mia’s relationship with Jimmy did not endure. It faded away, and he went on to marry another woman, Emily, played by Kathryn Kelly.

What Marshals Brings To The Story

Luke Grimes plays Kayce Dutton, while Logan Marshall-Green takes on the role of Pete “Cal” Calvin in Marshals. Arielle Kebbel appears as Belle Turek-Skinner, with Ash Santos cast as Andrea Cruz. Tatanka Means Miles Kittle is also part of the cast, along with Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater.

Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 4, at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. It will also be available to stream the next day on Paramount+.

Why This Matters For Fans

White’s return gives Marshals a direct link to the show that made him famous. Jimmy’s history is well documented, but the character has never been seen outside the Yellowstone universe — until now.

Other familiar faces from the Yellowstone world have already appeared on the show. This one adds another to the list, bringing with it a character who has had a difficult past.

What new secrets could be unearthed when Jimmy appears on Marshals? That’s the question fans are asking. The character’s past is full of rough patches, close calls, and hard choices. Whether Marshals digs into those or starts fresh, White’s presence alone carries weight.

Here’s what to expect from Jimmy’s return:

  1. A familiar face carrying decades of history
  2. A character who has faced trouble before
  3. A ranch hand with a brand he earned
  4. A man who has been through a lot with his grandfather, John, and Rip
  5. A man who found love with Mia and lost it, then found it again with Emily

White’s statement suggests he’s excited to explore what’s next for Jimmy. The character has been through a lot, and now he’s facing a new world on CBS.

The premiere for Jimmy’s return has been confirmed for October 4, with the first look already available now.
