A Long Road Back
This is not the first time Aspyr has brought a Lord of the Rings game back. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria and Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game both exist, and they offered interesting gameplay genres for the IP. But it was Aspyr’s re-release of War in the North that showed how bright The Lord of the Rings’ future could be in video games.
For years to come, it appears Aspyr’s work on re-releases and remasters of classic Lord of the Rings games will continue.
What the Game Actually Is
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is a modern remaster of the 2011 action-RPG. It follows ranger Eradan, loremaster Andriel, and champion Farin as they form a new fellowship to confront Agandaur, a Black Numenorean servant of Sauron gathering an army in the ruins of Fornost.
The game supports online and local co-op for up to three players. It launched across PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S on August 11, 2026. The game carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Users Interact.
Why This Matters
Limited Run Games has built its reputation on special editions that sell out quickly. The Master edition of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the Collector’s edition of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are two such examples, both of which have already been snapped up by fans. Now, anyone who wants a physical copy of this game can finally get their hands on one.
There is no set release date for the Deluxe edition yet, though the website lists it at “coming soon,”. The wish is that other classic Lord of the Rings games follow the same path eventually.
A mark of esteem for the series, the Deluxe edition stands as a token of honor toward the franchise. Whether it points toward a model for future re-releases will become clear with time.
