A warehouse stands quiet under dim light, marked with signs of sorrow and loss.

A man walked into a United Rentals location in Manassas, Virginia, Wednesday morning and shot three of his coworkers, killing two of them, before turning the gun on himself, police said. The shooting left the community reeling, and investigators are now piecing together what led to the violence.

Manassas police identified the suspect as Marvin Grant, a 37-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina. He allegedly opened fire during what authorities described as an act of “workplace violence.” The victims were identified as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. A third man was wounded but survived.

Setting the Scene in Manassas

The shooting took place at United Rentals in Manassas, a city about 30 miles outside of Washington, D.C. Police said there was “some kind of altercation,” and Grant allegedly pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot the three victims.

Manassas Police Chief Douglas Keen addressed the community at a news conference. He said authorities do not yet know a motive. He also noted that Grant allegedly said, “three people are going to die.”

Keen knew one of the victims personally. “The man was dedicated to coaching youth football,” the chief said, adding, “knowing his children are now fatherless, it hits home.”

The third victim, a man whose identity was not released, was in stable condition and expected to survive, according to the chief.

The Pursuit on Interstate 81

Grant fled the scene after the shooting. Police tracked him to Interstate 81 in Augusta County, Virginia, where he was spotted driving later in the morning.

When police tried to pull him over, Grant led officers on a chase. He eventually pulled over on the side of the interstate, got out of his car and pulled out a gun, police said.

Virginia State Police sent a tactical team and a negotiator to the site. Grant died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
