Melvins made Ozma in 1989, and the record wants to be heavy metal and punk rock at once. It does not quite land both ways. The songs run short and pile up fast, and the band leans on repetition instead of change to hold attention. This is a record about weight, not velocity.
Opening With Vile
The album starts with “Vile,” a slow, thick opener that sets the tone for everything that follows. It is heavy but not loud, more weight than force. “Oven” follows at 1:28 and runs on vocals and drums alone, a brief pause before the record picks back up with “At A Crawl.” “Let God Be Your Gardener” and “Creepy Smell” keep the pace tight, two tracks that pass without leaving much of a mark.
“Kool Legged” opens up the sound a bit, adding texture where the earlier tracks leaned on repetition alone. “Green Honey” and “Agonizer” are short and dense, doing little more than holding the middle of the record together. “Raise A Paw” and “Love Thing” are among the weaker cuts, brief and thin.
Revulsion / We Reach and the Long Middle
“Ever Since My Accident” and “Dead Dressed” are better, with “Dead Dressed” standing out as one of the few tracks that breaks through the record’s dull center. “Cranky Messiah” and “Claude” are short, forgettable pieces that fill space without earning it. “My Small Percent Shows Most” closes the record at under a minute, a quick bow that leaves little room for finality.
The standout moment comes in the middle of the album, on “Revulsion / We Reach,” where the band lets the guitar push past simple repetition and reaches for something closer to real shape. That track shows the band reaching toward the genre-dipping experiments it would fully embrace later, even while the rest of the record stays stuck in the same heavy, slow loop.
