The Meta VR Glasses have arrived as the first IMAX Enhanced headset, and the company is pitching them as a private cinema, a remote workplace, and a means of watching live sports. These glasses weigh 100 grams, feature a 5K Infinite Display constructed from micro-OLED panels, include Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and carry a price tag of $1,299.99. Ordering opens in Spring 2027.
The Weight Problem
The headset stays light enough for long periods of use. It solves the weight issue that has troubled VR from its earliest days, with pressure on the face being the specific complaint. The full-color passthrough is what Meta says makes it possible to see your surroundings while you work, so you can type on a flat surface turned into a virtual keyboard and touchpad.
Three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback can be expected from the battery. That interval covers the complete running time of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers theatrical edition.
Hologram Calling
One of the coolest new features is hologram calling. The system generates a digital version of yourself that mirrors your expressions in real time, and it works within apps such as WhatsApp and Zoom.
The glasses also support 3D movies, including a selection of Disney+ titles. From November, subscribers in select countries will be able to stream 3D movies like The Avengers and Black Panther. A separate Disney Immersive Cinema app will offer enhanced versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope.
Games and Sports
More than 75 games that make use of hand gestures are planned for launch. The VR glasses will also support hundreds more games that can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, but Meta has yet to reveal what those titles will be.
Once the glasses reach customers, Meta intends to hold over 100 live US sporting events per year in an immersive format. MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC all sit among its partners. ESPN’s experience kicks off with college football on Meta Quest this year, delivering 180-degree views and 8K streaming, then moves on to more sports in 2027.
The Price Tag
The Meta VR Glasses are not cheap, and they are not the only VR device Meta has announced recently. The company also unveiled the Tamagotchi-like Muse Charm at $1,299.99.
