Mistral has raised a large new round of funding, putting the company’s worth at a high level. The French AI company says this is the largest sum of money ever raised by a European technology company through shares.
Who Put In The Money
Samsung Electronics led the round. Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing backer PSG Equity served as partners alongside Samsung in leading it.
New investors joining this round include funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Many existing investors also took part, including a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, and Phoenix Court’s Solar fund — home to LocalGlobe, Latitude and Solar — along with Salesforce Ventures.
Mistral notes that its earlier round was led by ASML, a maker of machines used to produce small electronic parts, and this new round was led by Samsung Electronics, a maker of electronic devices and parts. Mistral says this backing reflects growing confidence that its approach can help organizations use the newest AI inside the settings where businesses actually work, while keeping control of their data, machines and knowledge.
What The Money Is For
Mistral says the money will grow the study and building work that sits under everything else it does: its machines, its tools and its promise of independence to customers. The funds will let Mistral buy more power for training large models, add more machines and reach more customers and countries faster.
The company now works in 20 countries. It says it helps more than 125 large organizations with important AI work. Airbus builds aircraft and is one of these customers. ASML, whose machines are used to make small electronic parts, is another. HSBC, a bank, is also named among them.
The Independence Argument
Mistral says the AI world has moved past one question. When generative AI first appeared, the main question was who could build the strongest model, the company says. Now, Mistral says, companies and governments ask something else: how to use AI for the work that matters most to them without giving away control of the machines and the intelligence behind them.
Mistral says it is the only AI company building everything needed to answer that question itself: models whose inner workings are shared in the open, the machines and power they run on, and the tools that put them to work. The company says this means customers never depend only on one seller’s plans, prices or supply.
Mistral calls this promise its layer of independence, built on four things:
- Data that stays inside the customer’s own walls
- Models the customer can shape and change
- Power for running models that is private and steady
- Systems in use that can be checked and watched fully
The company says this open way of building lets organizations use its tools without showing their most valuable data, work habits and knowledge built up over time to anyone outside their own walls.
Who Backed It
Mistral describes the round as a vote of confidence from investors across Europe, Asia and North America. The company says the group includes technology firms, investors who fund growing companies, and earlier backers who have supported Mistral since its start.
The company began three years ago.
Mistral’s list of backers now includes NVIDIA, a maker of electronic parts used in computers, and ASML, whose machines are used to make small electronic parts. The list also includes firms that fund growing companies and, with Luxembourg joining, one national government. The company says the round shows that its bet on open, independent AI has drawn support at a large scale.
