Nicholas Wootton, co-creator of the Prime Video spinoff alongside Nick Santora, spoke to Collider about the series. Neagley’s Built Family
Frances Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago, and she starts the show wanting nothing to do with anyone. According to Wootton, that changes fast.
“All she wants to do is keep people at arm’s distance, and they are just burrowing their way in,” Wootton said. “They become her built family.”
The team is made up of Detective Hudson Riley, Renee Birdwhistle, and Keno. Neagley tries to ditch them, but they keep forcing their way into her cases and her life. Wootton described the arc as one of his favorites in the series.
“Ultimately, they become her built family. That would obviously continue into Season 2, should we be so lucky.”
He also said the writers have seeded stories for the other characters. Hudson’s family connection to crime, Renee’s missing brother, and Neagley’s Haphephobia are all areas the team plans to mine further.
Renee’s Brother and Keno’s Twist
Renee’s missing brother is a central plot thread in the finale. She talks about wanting to find him, keeping the search present in viewers’ minds. Wootton confirmed the team is planning to explore that story in Season 2.
“We’d totally go into it in Season 2. There’s a big twist in there and a whole thing,” he said. “It’s a really fun story for Renee, and Keno is tied into it as well because he’s helping her find him and it’s the discovery of who he is.”
The story is fully written, according to Wootton. “We have it all figured out. It’s all written.”
The Handshake With Reacher
The season finale featured a restrained handshake between Neagley and Jack Reacher. Wootton explained why the moment was designed to be the final scene with Reacher.
“It was very early on in the development that that was going to be the final moment with Reacher,” he said. “It shows an arc. It shows that her development is incremental.”

He also confirmed the line that followed the handshake was always in the script. “Yes! It was very early on that that came up,” he said.

“I love watching them work. They were so good together,” he said. “It was seeing two people who I think feel that they are very fully formed.”
