In The Wheel of Time novels, the Forsaken are thirteen powerful channelers who crossed to the Shadow during the War of Power. They serve as a dozen deadly agents of the Dark One, and their schemes pushed Rand al’Thor and his allies to the very edge of ruin. Now, a tabletop game is stepping in to give players the power to release them, remolding the Last Battle to their own design.
The Forsaken In The Novels
Each Forsaken was once a powerful channeler from the Age of Legends, and they all left a lasting mark on the world long before the Last Battle began. Ishamael, Lanfear, Demandred, and Graendal are among the most notorious, manipulating nations and pursuing their own competing ambitions. Yet they are hardly united. Rivalries, betrayals, arrogance, and the Dark One’s willingness to resurrect certain fallen servants repeatedly reshape their ranks throughout the series, a process that never settles into any lasting order.
The Last Battle leaves the once-terrifying group effectively broken, with most having been killed, incapacitated, or otherwise defeated by the conclusion of A Memory of Light.
War Of The Dragon Rewrites The Story
Dire Wolf’s upcoming War of the Dragon is a tabletop game that gives players the chance to rewrite the struggle between the Light and Shadow. It takes recognizable characters, conflicts, and turning points from Robert Jordan’s novels and allows them to unfold differently on the table. The game begins around the events of The Shadow Rising before building toward its own version of Tarmon Gai’don, with player choices determining what the Last Battle ultimately looks like.
When a player takes on the role of the Shadow, the Forsaken Rahvin and Sammael join the action from the start. The other ten Forsaken, however, are kept apart from the game entirely, locked inside a separate deck known as the Dark One’s Prison. As the game unfolds through Epic Mode, the Shadow player can push the Inner Wheel forward and gather Prison icons, which can eventually open the way for the release of the locked Forsaken. Once freed, these powerful servants bring with them unique abilities and huge advantages that can shape the rest of the game.
Releasing all 11 also delivers a possibly defining advantage for the Last Battle. That setup produces a version of the Forsaken’s story distinct from the novels, letting players decide how well the Shadow employs them and which figures prove crucial in the war.
Freeing The Forsaken
The remaining Forsaken are held within the Dark One’s Prison deck, and the Shadow player sets them free by advancing the Inner Wheel and gathering Prison icons. Once freed, these Forsaken grant unique abilities and a vast edge further along, giving the Shadow’s servants a fate shaped by the player instead of being fixed by the novels.

What This Means For Fans
The ending of the books is set in stone: the Forsaken are broken, defeated, and gone. Yet the tabletop game allows players to bring the Forsaken back into the story.
The Shadow player decides how well the Dark One’s servants hold up, and which figures play a key role in the war. That is a remarkable shift for a property this large, which turns the Forsaken from a fixed footnote into a variable that changes every game.
