Paul Reubens voiced Bat-Mite on Batman: The Brave and the Bold and played the Penguin's father twice. Here's his Batman history.

Paul Reubens played the Penguin’s father in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, and again on Gotham. But that’s not the Batman role he should be remembered for. He also voiced Bat-Mite, and the animated show he did it for was one of the best Batman animated shows of all time.

Reubens is best known as Pee-wee Herman. He built a career out of taking small parts and making them memorable, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Mystery Men, and from 30 Rock to What We Do in the Shadows. But his Batman work has been a quiet thread through his career.

The Penguin’s Father Twice Over

Reubens first appeared as the Penguin’s father in Burton’s Batman Returns. Twenty-four years later, he played the role again on Gotham, in a three-episode arc.

That’s a strange pattern for anyone else. For Reubens, it’s business as usual. He takes a character and makes it his own, no matter how small the part.

Bat-Mite and the Jump the Shark Episode

The voice work came from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Bat-Mite is an imp from the fifth dimension who worships the Caped Crusader. The show’s comedy tone suited Reubens well.

The final episode is where things get meta. Bat-Mite uses his powers to force the show to jump the shark, canceling it so a new adaptation can take its place.

Voice Acting Career Behind the Microphone

Reubens didn’t just do Bat-Mite once. His first voice acting credit came years earlier, as Freaky Frankenstone in The Flintstone Comedy Show.

He voiced the sentient spaceship in Flight of the Navigator in the ’80s, and Lock in The Nightmare Before Christmas in the ’90s. Later, he hit his stride with movies like The Smurfs and Tom and Jerry’s Giant Adventure.

His animated TV credits include Bob’s Burgers, Adventure Time, and American Dad. He moved into video games too, reprising Bat-Mite in Batman: The Brave and the Bold — The Videogame, and providing voices for Minecraft and Call of Duty.

The Documentary That Told the Story

His career was as varied as the man himself. That was brought to life in the documentary Pee-wee as Himself, one of the best HBO documentaries of all time.

Whether you remember him as Pee-wee Herman, the Penguin’s father, or Bat-Mite, his performances stuck with audiences.

What This Says About Reubens

Reubens has spent decades proving that a great actor doesn’t need a leading role to leave a mark. He took Bat-Mite, a silly character, and made him memorable.

The Gotham appearance was a callback to Burton’s film. The Bat-Mite episode was a joke about the industry. Both were small roles that mattered.

The documentary showed a career full of variety. Reubens has worked across film, television, video games, and animation. He’s been a fixture in pop culture for decades.

It’s a funny footnote to a career that’s anything but small.
