Peter Byrne, Singer and Co-Founder of Naked Eyes, Dead at 74

Peter Byrne, the singer and co-founder of the 1980s pop band Naked Eyes, has died at 74. Jim Merlis, a spokesperson for the group, confirmed Byrne’s death on Sept. 14 in Los Angeles. He died peacefully after a brief illness, according to Merlis.

A specific cause of death was not immediately available.

The Early Years in Bath

Byrne and Rob Fisher met in Bath, England, while attending college. Their shared musical bond led them to form Neon, a band that also included future Tears for Fears members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Byrne and Fisher later split off to form Naked Eyes as a duo, signing with EMI Records in 1982.

Naked Eyes Arrives

The self-titled debut studio album, which was released as Burning Bridges in some regions, came out the following year. The LP reached Number 32 on the Billboard 200, propelled by two of its biggest hits. “Always Something There to Remind Me,” a cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s song, peaked at Number Eight on the Billboard 100. “Promises, Promises” reached Number 11 and became a signature synth-pop track for the band.

“When the Lights Go Out” also became a Top 40 hit. The album’s success established Naked Eyes as a radio fixture during the New Wave era.

Fuel for the Fire

The band’s sophomore effort, Fuel for the Fire, arrived in 1984. “(What) in the Name of Love” became a Top 40 hit, and the album peaked at Number 83 on the Billboard 200. After its release, Naked Eyes disbanded.

Fisher’s Death and Beyond

Fisher died in 1999 at the age of 42. Byrne continued to make music and tour the U.S. and internationally. In 2001, he released a solo album titled The Real Illusion. Additional Naked Eyes releases followed, including 2007’s Fumbling With the Covers, 2021’s Disguise the Limit, and a remaster of their self-titled debut that arrived last year.

Stevie Wonder’s “Part-Time Lover”

In 1985, Byrne lent his vocals to Stevie Wonder’s hit “Part-Time Lover.” He also turned to songwriting for television, film, and for the Olsen Twins.
