Crunchyroll has added Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World season 4, episode #19, and the show is living up to its name by offering the biggest isekia anime episode of 2026. Titled “Shaula / Hero,” the installment ends the Pleiades Watchtower arc with a 45-minute finale that squeezes a fight, a farewell, and a turning point for Rem into one compact package. It takes real confidence to call any single episode the best of the year, but this one backs up the claim.
The Battle At The Tower
Studio White Fox could have wrapped up The Pleiades Watchtower arc with a swift celebration. Instead, they chose chaos. Episode #19 thrusts Subaru, Julius, Meili, and Beatrice into a final confrontation with Shaula, who now appears as a massive crimson scorpion. Even so, there remains a person hiding beneath all that violence, which makes the fight feel far more painful than an ordinary monster battle.
Shaula’s last scenes are hard to sit through. After spending about 400 years waiting near the tower, she finally gets a brief period with Subaru before her story ends. The moment she returns to human form, kisses Subaru, and then fades away hits hard because the show has been holding back this goodbye for a long time.
Rem Finally Awakens
The episode does not let anyone breathe after that. Emilia’s name is restored, the tower’s trials appear to be finished, and then the Witch of Envy’s shadows arrive. Their arrival triggers Volcanica, leading to a strong attack that sends Subaru, Rem, and Rui Arneb flying into the Vollachian wilderness. That is the setup.
The payoff arrives in the foreign grass itself. Rem awakens from her slumber, and the twist is a harsh one: after having her memories wiped away by Gluttony, she looks directly at Subaru and asks “Who are you?”. Seeing Subaru accept that crushing mental blow and immediately declare that he will become her hero is the ideal final moment for an episode that has spent nearly an hour putting him through hell.
Why This Finale Works
Season 4 of the Pleiades Watchtower arc has delivered one impossible situation after another for its characters, and each one landed harder than the last. From Julius Juukulius reclaiming his knightly honor against Reid Astrea to Subaru’s desperate struggle to piece his broken mind back together after losing his memories, it has been an absolute masterclass in psychological fantasy. It proved exactly why Re:Zero operates in a completely different league from most isekai, redefining the genre.
The finale earns its payoff by denying Subaru a simple way out. He receives the kiss, he receives the reunion, and then he receives the most difficult question imaginable from the person who mattered most. The pain lands hard because the stakes were established so early on.
The Road To Season 5
Season 5 is the next chapter, and it will be a completely different kind of story. Subaru is stranded in the unforgiving Vollachia Empire, Rem has no memory of him, and Rui Arneb is barely the helpless ally Subaru probably wanted. Survival becomes just as important as solving the mess surrounding Subaru.
The wait for season 5 will stretch on for a while yet. Subaru finds himself alone in Vollachia, far from those he holds dear, with Rem’s blank slate means he has to rebuild their relationship from scratch. The Witch of Envy”s shadow hanging over him, foreshadowing more trouble ahead.
What Happens Next
This upcoming chapter puts Subaru in a position where he must live while sorting out the chaos around him. It is a heavy task for a show that has never hesitated to put its main character through great suffering. The episode shows that Re:Zero is only growing more skilled at making life absolutely miserable for its most beloved characters.
Here is how the episode sets up season 5:
- Subaru is stranded in Vollachia, isolated from everyone he cares about.
- Rem has no memory of him, forcing him to rebuild their relationship from scratch.
- Rui Arneb is barely the helpless ally Subaru probably wanted.
- The Witch of Envy’s shadows trigger Volcanica, sending Subaru, Rem, and Rui Arneb into the foreign grass.
The finale of Re:Zero pushes Subaru’s suffering to its peak, and yet the payoff feels earned. This episode is without question the biggest isekia anime installment of 2026 thus far.
