Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brings the blue hedgehog back for another round of action, comedy and family fun, and this time he has a new rival in tow. The film, directed by Jeff Fowler, picks up after Sonic’s arrival on Earth and drops him into a fight with Shadow, a villain with powers that outmatch everything the team has faced before. The result is a movie that leans darker than its predecessors while still keeping the tone light enough for kids to enjoy.

Shadow Arrives
The story opens in 1974, when a meteorite carrying Shadow crashes into Oklahoma. He is seized by the U.S. military and experimented on by Professor Gerald Robotnik at a G.U.N. research facility. Shadow forms a bond with Maria, Gerald’s granddaughter, but tragedy strikes when Maria is killed in an explosion during a failed escape attempt. That loss sends Shadow into suspended animation until 2024, when an unknown hacker frees him from a Japanese prison.
In the present day, Sonic celebrates his anniversary in Green Hills, Montana, with Tails, Knuckles, and their adoptive parents Tom and Maddie Wachowski. G.U.N. Director Rockwell shows up to recruit the trio as Team Sonic to catch Shadow in Tokyo. Shadow overpowers them and escapes, forcing the team to go rogue when Rockwell turns against them.
The Cast Steps Up
Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic’s voice, and Jim Carrey is back as both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. Keanu Reeves joins as the voice of Shadow, and Idris Elba voices Knuckles. Colleen O’Shaughnessey voices Tails. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter return as Tom and Maddie, with Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Krysten Ritter as Director Rockwell, Adam Pally as Wade, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, and Shemar Moore as Randall.
Carrey’s decision to return came down to the script and the cash. He told reporters that he came back “because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.” Fowler printed that quote in 24-carat ink, which he estimated would be worth about $100,000.

Reeves joined as Shadow because Fowler saw a connection between his work in the John Wick films and the “vibe we’re trying to channel” for the character. Fowler said there was an “obvious corollary” between Reeves’s performance in those films and the tone they wanted for Shadow, calling them a “perfect, albeit unconventional, ‘audition.'” Fowler added that even if John Wick had never been made, he believed Reeves’s established history with dark and edgy characters would have led to them casting him anyway.
The Darker Turn
The film draws on elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, and it pushes the franchise toward a darker direction. Shadow’s backstory, with its tragic loss of Maria, gives the villain a weight that earlier movies didn’t have. The movie still stays mindful of family appeal, but the threat feels bigger and more personal.
The action sequences hold up. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails move fast, and the film knows when to let the jokes land and when to let the stakes breathe. The film also spends time building out the world, showing how G.U.N. operates and how Shadow’s escape sets off a chain reaction across the globe.
A Solid Addition
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it delivers on what the franchise does best: big laughs, big fights and a sense of wonder. The cast is strong, the story moves quickly, and the shift toward a darker tone doesn’t lose the charm that made the first film work.
There are moments where the plot gets busy, and some of the side characters don’t get the development they deserve. But the core of Sonic, Knuckles and Tails working together holds the movie together.
The film was announced in February 2022, and production began in September 2023 for animated characters and November 2023 for live-action shooting in London. Production wrapped by March 2024.
