Lego’s PlayStation set is finally here, and it launches this week. The Lego Sony PlayStation is a 1,911-piece recreation of the original console and controller, complete with a functioning “Open” button and a spring-loaded lid that reveals two dioramas from PlayStation’s early days.
The set costs $179.99 and is available now for Lego Insiders starting Oct. 1, with general release following on Oct. 4. It will ship from Lego.com.
Building the Console
The Lego PlayStation is built to “near 1:1 scale.” It comes with a functioning “Open” button on the front-right corner, which triggers the lid mechanism. Inside, the build reveals a large Lego recreation of the classic “PS” logo, alongside mini dioramas based on 1997’s Gran Turismo and 1999’s Ape Escape.
The set also includes some dioramas that nod to PlayStation’s early history.
How It Compares
Lego has a long history of recreating classic consoles in brick form. Here’s how the PlayStation set stacks up against the company’s other console builds:
| Console | Pieces | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Lego Atari 2600 | 2,532 | Not stated |
| Lego Nintendo Entertainment System | 2,646 | Not stated |
| Lego Sega Genesis | 480 | Not stated |
| Lego Sony PlayStation | 1,911 | $179.99 |
The PlayStation set sits in the middle. It is smaller than the Atari 2600 and NES builds, but larger than the Sega Genesis set.
Extras and Dimensions
All of Lego’s video game console sets have included varied extras. The Lego NES came with a retro TV set, while the Lego 2600 included multiple cartridges.
The Lego PlayStation set measures over 2.5 inches (6 cm) high, 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep. The set is rated for ages 18+.
Release Dates
The set launches with a staggered rollout. Lego Insiders get first access on Oct. 1, followed by a general release on Oct. 4. Both groups receive the same product; the difference is who gets it first.
The set carries the product number 72306. Its retail price is £139.99 in the UK, €159.99 in Europe, and $179.99 in North America.
What We Think
This is a delightful addition to Lego’s console series. The working “Open” button and the spring-loaded lid hiding dioramas of Gran Turismo and Ape Escape are clever touches. The near-1:1 scale build, combined with the nostalgia of those two games, makes this a strong entry in a lineup that already includes the Atari 2600, NES and Sega Genesis.
The price of $179.99 is the US price. The UK price is £139.99 and the European price is €159.99.
This set is worth the wait for anyone who grew up with the original PlayStation. It captures the look and feel of a console that defined a generation, and it does so in a way that respects both the hardware and the memories it represents.
