Focus Entertainment has released the numbers for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and the most-played class in PvE isn’t who you’d expect. Tactical takes the crown, picked 44.4 million times over the last year. The full ranking, from most to least played, runs Tactical, Bulwark, Assault, Heavy, Vanguard, Techmarine — and then there’s the odd one out.

Sniper, the ranged damage specialist, is entirely absent from the list. It didn’t slip past the cutoff; it just didn’t make the cut. Focus told the site’s writer that the team wanted to focus on the top six classes, and Sniper came in just behind Techmarine with 20 million picks.

Poor Sniper.

The Numbers Behind the List

The full breakdown shows how far apart the classes sit:

Class Picks
Tactical 44.4 million
Bulwark 40.1 million
Assault 33.3 million
Heavy 30.4 million
Vanguard 27.4 million
Techmarine 22.3 million
Sniper 20 million

Tactical’s lead is substantial. Bulwark follows at 40.1 million, and the gap widens sharply from there. Assault, Heavy and Vanguard round out the middle of the pack, while Techmarine and Sniper trail far behind.

Techmarine is the DLC class, which might explain its lower numbers — but it still beat Sniper to sixth place. That suggests Sniper isn’t unpopular because it’s weak, exactly. It’s unpopular because it’s hard.

Why Tactical Wins

Tactical’s dominance makes sense on paper. The class gets access to melta weapons, which are amazing in this game, plus the boss-melting Pyreblaster primary weapon. But the real star is the Auspex Scan, the Tactical’s signature ability.

Auspex Scan reveals and heavily debuffs enemies in a targeted area. It’s a game-changer, particularly on higher difficulty levels, and for many players it’s an essential part of any high-level PvE group. Tactical players can scan a room, mark the biggest threat, and strip its defenses before the fight even starts.

Bulwark also performs well, sitting second on the list with 40.1 million picks. Its recovery and healing abilities keep a group alive, and the class’s popularity reflects that value. The writer admits they’re a Bulwark player themselves.

What About the Other Classes?

Assault, Heavy and Vanguard fill out the middle of the rankings. None of them hit the top spot, but none of them are struggling either. The game clearly treats all seven classes as viable, and that’s part of what makes Space Marine 2 work.

The writer notes that the game does a decent job of making each class viable across most difficulty levels. The fun comes from trying out the various classes and their special abilities, and it’s certainly a good thing that you can get by with almost any combo most of the time.

But the outlier remains. Sniper is powerful, but it’s not accessible. It has a Camo Cloak ability that lets it turn nearly invisible, which sounds great until you try to use it in a crowded fight. Getting the most out of Sniper takes practice, and that barrier keeps players away.

The Roadmap Ahead

Space Marine 2’s Year 3 roadmap includes the Apothecary class for early 2027. It’ll be interesting to see if it can nudge ahead of the Techmarine when the dust settles.

The comparison between Sniper and Techmarine is a small but telling detail. Sniper is a powerful class that few players bother with. Techmarine is a DLC class that beat it to sixth place. One problem is skill ceiling; the other is simple availability.

Saber’s Own Admissions

Meanwhile, developer Saber recently admitted that the Chaos enemies are harder to fight than the Tyranids in Space Marine 2, and confirmed plans to do something about it. That’s separate from the class rankings, but it shows the studio paying attention to how players actually experience the game.

The class data is a snapshot of how players actually behave, not just what the design intended. Tactical is the best class in practice because it rewards easy-to-understand coordination. Sniper is the best class on paper, but it demands precision that most players aren’t willing to invest in.

The Bottom Line

The most-played class in Space Marine 2 is Tactical, and the least-played class is Sniper — except Sniper isn’t on the list. It’s a charming reminder that accessibility beats raw power in player choice.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 does a good job of making every class viable, but some are easier to love than others. Tactical’s Auspex Scan makes it indispensable. Sniper’s invisibility makes it fun to watch from afar.

The rankings will likely shift again next year when the Apothecary arrives. Until then, Tactical reigns supreme, Bulwark keeps everyone alive, and Sniper stays hidden in the shadows — exactly where it seems to prefer.
