Strange New Worlds Confirms Gary Mitchell Is Jenna Mitchell’s Stepbrother

Strange New Worlds confirms Gary Mitchell is Jenna Mitchell's stepbrother, a surprising retcon tying the two Starfleet officers together.

Captain Kirk’s First Star Trek Enemy Officially Gets A Surprising Strange New Worlds Retcon

Strange New Worlds has found a new way to talk about Gary Mitchell, and it involves his sister.

In the season 4 finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” directed by Chris Fisher and written by Henry Alonso Myers and Robbie Thompson, Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) tells Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) a story about his past. The tale proves Uhura is a time traveler by mentioning events she hasn’t lived through yet, including a poker game at Starbase 6. And in that story, Kirk name-checks Gary Mitchell — as Jenna Mitchell’s stepbrother.

The Poker Story

Kirk describes the scene at Starbase 6, where a solar storm kept ships docked for parsecs. He, Nyota, Ortegas, and Gary Mitchell — Jenna’s stepbrother — played poker for five days straight. The line establishes that Gary Mitchell is the stepbrother of Lieutenant Jenna Mitchell (Rong Fu), an operations officer on Captain Christopher Pike’s Enterprise bridge crew.

The retcon is small but significant. Gary Mitchell is a character from Star Trek’s original series, where he becomes a dangerous menace after gaining psychic powers. Now Strange New Worlds has confirmed he’s part of Jenna’s family.

Jenna Mitchell’s Background

Jenna Mitchell was created for Strange New Worlds. She appears often at navigation, stationed next to helmsman Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). The connection to Gary Mitchell wasn’t on most fans’ radar, partly because Gary is Caucasian and Jenna is Asian.

But now they are stepbrother and stepsister, both serving aboard the USS Enterprise as Starfleet officers.

What The Line Actually Proves

The reveal comes in service of proving Uhura is a time traveler. Kirk mentions an event Uhura hasn’t experienced yet — teaching her to play poker. That establishes the timeline, and the Gary Mitchell reference is part of the proof.

The line also connects two characters fans might not have expected to share a surname. Jenna Mitchell exists outside of Gary Mitchell’s story, and Strange New Worlds has now tied them together.

Where Gary Mitchell Goes From Here

“Tomorrow’s Enterprise” doesn’t specify that Gary Mitchell is on Captain Kirk’s Enterprise in the one-year-later alternate future. Kirk only said multiple starships were “holed up” at Starbase 6, so Gary could have been serving on a different ship.

But Gary Mitchell is aboard Captain Kirk’s USS Enterprise in The Original Series, where he breaks bad and has to be put down. That means he could appear in Strange New Worlds’ series finale at the end of season 5, when Kirk launches the Enterprise as its new Captain.

Jenna Mitchell’s whereabouts are unknown. She last appeared in season 3’s “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail,” which is ironically about James Kirk’s first time as acting Captain of the USS Farragut. She may leave the Enterprise when Captain Pike exits, if she hasn’t already.

The Family Connection

Strange New Worlds has already set James and Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) as possibly the first brothers to serve on the Starship Enterprise, albeit not at the same time. Now Jenna and Gary Mitchell may be the first step-siblings to serve on the Enterprise, although perhaps not at the same time.

It’s a small joke, really. But it’s the kind of detail that Trek fans will appreciate — a quiet nod to a character from the past, now connected to a new one.

What We Make Of It

The retcon is amusing. It’s a throwaway line that adds a family connection to a character fans haven’t seen in years. It doesn’t change much about Gary Mitchell’s story — he still becomes a dangerous menace in The Original Series — but it gives him a new context.

It’s also a reminder that Strange New Worlds operates in the same universe as The Original Series, even when it skips ahead to the future. The show can drop references to established characters and their families without having to bring them all back.

For now, the joke is in the line itself. Fans will have to wait to see if Gary Mitchell shows up in season 5 to confirm the connection.
