Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 ended with a cliffhanger involving Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), but the showrunners admit they had no idea what happened to her when they wrote the finale. That admission comes with a promise: the mystery will finally be answered in the upcoming fifth and final season.
The episode in question is “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” the finale of season 4. It was written as the potential end of the series, with cancellation looming until Paramount+ offered a two-hour movie to wrap things up. Executive producer and co-showrunner Akiva Goldman then negotiated for a six-episode fifth season, which wrapped filming in December 2025.
Goldman’s Admission
Speaking to TV Line, Goldman and executive producer and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers were asked about La’an’s fate. Myers was blunt about it.
“I will say straight up that at the time we wrote that, we weren’t certain of what it would be,” Myers said. “But I will say that the future, which was undecided, is something that we’ve eventually come to.”
Goldman agreed. “Yeah, we will locate everybody, both canon and non-canon characters. You won’t have to wonder,” he said.
What The Finale Actually Did
In “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) switched places with her future self, traveling forward one year in time. When Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) asked the younger Uhura about her time travel, she asked where La’an is. That question drew an alarmed reaction and a non-answer from Kirk.
Myers and Goldman hadn’t settled La’an’s fate when they wrote that scene. The finale could have left her future open-ended if the series had ended there. Instead, the show got a reprieve.
The Six-Episode Solution
Strange New Worlds was greenlit for six more episodes, giving the writers room to properly dramatize La’an’s destiny. Myers and Goldman now say they have reached a conclusion for her.
“Thankfully, Strange New Worlds was greenlit for six more episodes to properly dramatize La’an’s destiny,” the report states. “That will play out in the fifth and final season.”
What Fans Expected
Many Star Trek fans expect La’an to die by the end of the series. She is an original character created for the prequel, but she is a descendant of Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), who is never mentioned in Star Trek: The Original Series. Because she was created decades after the original show, the Sword of Damocles has always hung over her head.
There are other options, though. La’an could leave the USS Enterprise when Captain Kirk takes command and transfer to another starship. The report notes that the easy solution would be for Lt. Noonien-Singh to simply leave the ship.
Chong’s Final Season
Christina Chong is expected to appear in all six episodes of Strange New Worlds season 5. La’an Noonien-Singh’s ultimate destiny may not be revealed until the series finale.
La’an’s romantic relationship with the future Captain Kirk started in season 4 and will continue through the final season. That relationship is destined to end.
A Throwaway Answer Avoided
If the show had ended with season 4, La’an’s fate would have been a throwaway answer at best. The producers could have decided her path and added it in post-production. Instead, they got the chance to build it into the story.
The irony is that the showrunners freely admitted they didn’t know what happened to a major character at the point the finale was written, and then promptly promised the audience they’d find out anyway. It’s a confession that reads as honest, even if it means fans have to wait for the resolution.
