Taylor Swift has four new songs for you, and she’s calling them an encore. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore drops today, expanding her 2025 album with “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon.” The record isn’t leftover material from the original sessions. Swift went back to Sweden with Max Martin and Shellback after the album’s record-breaking opening week, and she found herself writing again.

“We wrote more songs,” Swift said. The tracks were “born out of pure gratitude” for fans’ response to the album. That’s a nice reason to make music, especially since Swift had previously told everyone there wouldn’t be more. When the original album came out, she was adamant about its 12-song tracklist being final. “There’s not a 13th, there’s not other ones coming,” she said at the time, explaining that adding or removing anything would upset the record’s carefully constructed balance.

The Four New Songs

The encore opens with “Patient Zero,” which arrives just days before the 2026 MTV VMAs on September 27th. That makes it the lead single for the expanded edition. The other three songs follow in order:

Swift is nominated for Best Album at this year’s ceremony. She’s also set to receive the newly created Artist Director Honor.

Writing in Sweden

The story starts with the opening week. The original album’s record-breaking debut drew attention quickly, and Swift’s response was immediate. She returned to Sweden with Max Martin and Shellback, and a studio was nearby. The writing began almost by accident.

“We wrote more songs,” she said. The tracks were “born out of pure gratitude” for fans’ response to the album. That’s a generous reason for making music. She wasn’t chasing a number or a deadline. She was responding to something real.

What Changed Her Mind

Swift had been explicit about the album’s completeness. She framed the original tracklist as a deliberate balance, and she said at the time that adding or removing anything would upset that balance. Now she’s delivered four more songs anyway.

The gratitude she described is the whole story. She went back because the response to the album felt worthy of a response. The writing wasn’t a plan, and the songs weren’t leftovers. They were new material, born out of pure thanks.

The VMAs Stakes

The VMAs offer a second stage for the encore. Swift’s Best Album nomination puts her in direct competition with the field, and she’s also receiving the newly created Artist Director Honor on September 27th. The nomination is part of the package.

The VMAs are the next stop for the encore. The nomination gives the expanded edition a platform beyond the stream.

A Generous Reason for Music

Swift’s return to the studio was pure gratitude. She went back because fans responded to the album, and that response moved her enough to write more. That’s a generous reason for making music. She wasn’t chasing a number or a deadline. She was responding to something real.

The encore is a gift, not a strategy. That’s the story worth holding onto.
