“Ted Lasso” fans have waited a long time for Roy and Keeley to reunite, and Season 4, Episode 8 finally delivers it. But the episode also brings back Rupert, and that storyline is the one that Jeremy Swift says deserves the most attention.
Swift plays Leslie Higgins, AFC Richmond’s director of communications, and he spoke to TVLine about the episode, which saw Rupert buying back shares of the club. The interview covers Rupert’s power play, the return of Roy and Keeley, and whether audiences should trust the newly appointed special advisor Zelda.
Rupert’s Share Scavenger Hunt
The episode opens with Richmond shareholders selling their shares to an unknown third party. Higgins begins a scavenger hunt that leads him to the Crown & Anchor, where Mae reveals the answer: Rupert is trying to claw back ownership from his ex-wife Rebecca.
Swift described the Crown & Anchor scene as “fabulous.” He recalled a previous visit to the pub in Season 1, Episode 6, where the team met about ghosts in a locker room. “But yeah, you’re right,” he said. “It’s great to do. It’s what this show does so well, is recalibrate the characters by mixing them up and having a different dynamic when you put people who don’t normally meet up with each other.”
He also noted the cinematic references in the scene. “One particular ’70s film [‘All the President’s Men’]. Her vape is a clue,” he explained. “So it was a lot of fun to do, and it had gravitas as well.”
The challenge for Higgins and Rebecca is significant. Rupert has shown in the past that he can wield enormous power and pull the rug from underneath people. Swift said the situation is still up in the air. “We’re not at 100%,” he said. “It’s a challenge for both of them.”
The Late Anthony Head
Anthony Head played Rupert for several seasons of “Ted Lasso.” His death earlier this year came after production on Season 4 had wrapped.
Swift was asked directly about Rupert’s future. “I can’t really give you anything about that, unfortunately,” he replied.
He then reflected on what Head meant to the show’s cast. “Oh, he was hugely beloved, and he delighted in playing this creepy guy,” Swift said. “I first worked with him in 1983. It was in the same season at a theater festival where he was the talk of any group of women — and there were a lot of men who were besotted with him as well — because he was so talented, incredibly handsome, incredibly charming and so much fun.”
Head had played similar characters before, Swift noted. “Sometimes casting is about the way you look, but he’s such a fun, beautiful man, and he’ll be so missed,” he said.
Zelda’s Chaotic Arrival
Tracey Ullman’s Zelda has been a chaos agent this season, and she was recently installed as a special advisor at AFC Richmond. When asked if audiences should be suspicious of her, Swift laughed. “That was a bit of an evil laugh I did myself, wasn’t it?” he said.
He answered the question directly. “They would have a right to be,” he said. “Can you trust anybody who fires a gun off at a New Year’s Eve party?”
Zelda’s character is written to be compelling, Swift said. “It’s a brilliantly written character, and Tracey, of course, riffs on it. In scenes, she added stuff that was just completely character-appropriate for Zelda.”
He described the dynamic Zelda creates. “She’s got this dynamic that some people have that you meet in life who are like little whirlwinds and shake you up, and they’re successful. So it’s attractive. What are you going to do with it? Are you going to go with it? Are you going to step back and be cautious?” That is the challenge for the other characters in the show — and for the audience.
Gemma’s Injury and the Club’s Future
Gemma suffers what could be a season-ending injury this week, just as Rupert appears to be plotting his way back into Richmond. Swift weighed the stakes for the Lady Greyhounds.
“It’s a balance, isn’t it?” he said. “The success of a team is its management and the talent of its players. So if you’re going to lose somebody so crucial, what’s the next step?”
He pointed to the importance of star players. “Look at what Messi did over his time,” he said. “Then it can throw finances out of kilter.”
The timing of Gemma’s injury adds to the drama. “It’s a great time, of course, within the season for it to happen because it just ramps up the stakes for the stories and hopefully pulls the audience into working their brains themselves about what the outcome is going to be.”
Roy and Keeley Reunite
The episode reunites Roy and Keeley, and the interview cuts off before Swift could say more.
