Ancient Greeks who wanted to track their hours had a name for the device itself: the “water thief.” That was their term for the water clock. The earliest known examples date back to the sixteenth century BC, with evidence found in modern-day Iraq, Iran, and Egypt. More ambiguous traces have turned up in India and China.

Those first clocks were simple bowls. Water slowly dripped out at an irregular pace, which made them unreliable. That problem stayed unsolved until the third century BC, when a Greek inventor named Ctesibius decided to fix it.

Ctesibius Builds a Better Clock

Ctesibius built a water clock that ran on its own. It used a vertical cylinder that rotated once per year. The cylinder carried straight vertical lines for the months and curved horizontal lines for the hours of the day.

A pointer floated on the water inside the cylinder. As the water level changed, the pointer moved, showing the current hour. The cylinder was filled through a feeding reservoir that stayed constantly supplied with water.

The point of this setup was steady flow. Ctesibius wanted the rate of water to remain constant so the pointer moved at a consistent speed. He added a tube that emptied the reservoir every 24 hours, which started the daily cycle again without human help.

A water wheel connected to a system of gears kept the cylinder turning. That let the display keep pace with the changing length of the daylight-based ancient Greek hour.

A Record That Lasted 1,800 Years

The design worked. According to the animated video Deconstructed, which explains the whole mechanism with visual aids, Ctesibius’ clock kept better time than anything else on Earth for 1,800 years.

That record lasted until 1656. That year, Christiaan Huygens invented the pendulum clock, which finally surpassed the water clock’s accuracy.

The narrator of Deconstructed states that in a world without electricity, digital logic, or even mechanical clocks, this ancient invention laid the foundation for automation and the keeping of time as we know them today.

The Appeal of Flowing Water

The steady drip of water mirrors how people experience the passage of hours. The flow feels natural, almost instinctive.

A glass with sand passing through it, which came later as an invention between Ctesibius and Huygens, carried the same appeal. Grains of sand moving through a narrow neck kept the comparison alive. Even now, the image of sand running out retains its power.
