If Republicans take control of Congress in November, President Trump has pledged every grown American adult $5,000, a promise he refers to as a dividend. Yet the response has been unusually restrained, including from Republicans themselves. The pledge has drawn notice, but few appear convinced it will come to pass. NPR senior national political correspondent Mara Liasson joined Ayesha Rascoe to explain the convention and what followed it.
The Empty Arena
Friday night, Trump spoke to reporters about his two-day Republican midterm convention in Dallas, which he described as a tremendous success. He noted that it was packed.
The fact check is accurate: there were a great many empty seats to be seen.
He admitted the emptiness himself. Trump looked up at the arena and saw the vacant seats, then cracked that he got to do a little bit better in the back.
“I got to do a little bit better in the back, right there.”
He added that he didn’t like the little skin showing and that he shouldn’t have looked up.
The Dividend Promise
Trump has been repeating his $5,000 promise since the convention. The reaction has been tepid across the aisle. Some Republicans worry the payout would cost more than $1 trillion, adding to the already historically high national debt unless it was paid for by raising other taxes or more budget cuts.
A great many of Trump’s pledges remain undone. Among them is a promised $5,000 DOGE dividend for Americans, along with a $2,000 tariff rebate. He also vowed to end foreign wars and said inflation and high prices would fall at once — neither of those things has come to pass.
Vance’s Speech
JD Vance, the Vice President, addressed the convention and devoted more of his remarks to painting Republicans as the party of common sense, while branding Democrats as the party of hatred. He described Democrats as the party that despises America and the people who built it. He also pointed out that Democrats can find sympathy for the terrorists who carried out 9/11.
The crowd was appealed to by Vance through a reference to Charlie Kirk’s hatred of war in general.
“What I’m asking you to do is do what Charlie did. Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater.”
The Elephant In The Room
The war in Iran remains very unpopular even among Republicans, and Vance did not name it. He also avoided naming the $5,000 promise. Instead, he urged the crowd to follow what Kirk did and refuse to hand the country over to a bunch of crazy people due to some single policy issue here or there.
The war with Iran has become a major policy issue for Americans, who see it as a choice made by Trump that has pushed gas prices up and now produced record-high diesel prices. Trump has acknowledged as much himself, saying prices will remain elevated until after the midterms.
The 2028 Question
Republicans are watching Vance lay the groundwork for his own run for the White House in 2028. He is trying to become the inheritor of the Trump mantle. But can he come anywhere close to that deep emotional bond with the MAGA base that Trump has?
Some people have called it a cult of personality.
Structural Advantages
Republicans believe their financial resources, the way district lines have been drawn to benefit them, and a possible decline in the use of mail-in voting will allow them to withstand the energy Democrats have shown. They hope these structural benefits will keep them from suffering a political disaster when the fall elections come around.
The Bottom Line
Trump’s $5,000 promise has drawn tepid reaction even among Republicans. Vance cast Democrats as haters while appealing to Charlie Kirk’s legacy.
