Where The Original A Different World Stars Are Now

Where are the actors from the original A Different World now? From Oscars to voice work, we trace the careers of the cast.

By mitch·7 min read
A group of actors dressed in 1990s college-style clothing pose together in a bright, warm-lit setting reminiscent of a sitcom set.

“A Different World” started as a spin-off of “The Cosby Show,” built around Denise Huxtable’s (Lisa Bonet) experience at a historically Black college, or HBCU. The show was supposed to deal with issues the family-friendly “Cosby” wouldn’t touch. Instead, it became one of the best spinoff shows ever — and nearly everyone in the cast moved on in their own direction.

Just as Debbie Allen came aboard as a new producer to make the Black college setting more accurate, Bonet exited after a single season, in one of the 15 most controversial TV exits ever. Jasmine Guy then stepped up to take over the lead role, and the show kept running for five more seasons. During that time, Guy’s Whitley evolved from a spoiled antagonist into the main character.

With a sequel to the original show now streaming on Netflix, featuring some of the original cast members back in the fold, the question arises: what became of the creators behind the first series?

Bonet’s Long Road From Denise To Moon

Bonet’s pregnancy cost her a place on the show. That very year the show began, she and Lenny Kravitz went to Las Vegas and tied the knot. Twelve months after that, she found herself expecting. The executive producer, Bill Cosby, who at the time was seen as a champion of family values, declared that Denise couldn’t raise a child on her own.

Bonet pushed past her good-girl image. She performed a full sex scene with Mickey Rourke in the film “Angel Heart,” which, within the story, turns out to be incestuous. She also showed up topless in Interview Magazine and with implied nudity in Rolling Stone.

She returned to “The Cosby Show” in 1989 as a now-married Denise with an adopted daughter. She was fired by Cosby in 1991 over creative differences. In 1993, she and Kravitz divorced, and she changed her legal name to Lilakoi Moon, while using her old name for acting purposes.

Since her early work, she has appeared in films including “Enemy of the State” and “Biker Boyz,” along with television shows such as “Life on Mars” and “The Red Road.”. She began dating Jason Momoa in 2005, and they went on to have two children and make the film “Road to Paloma” together in 2014. They tied the knot in 2017, and split up in 2024. Her final acting role came with the Chanel No. 5-inspired short “Jellywolf”, which arrived in 2017.

Tomei’s Oscar And The Marvel Years

The part of Maggie, a white woman at an HBCU, was played by Marisa Tomei. Meg Ryan was first set for the role, but she turned it down so she could focus on her film career instead. Tomei stepped in as Denise’s roommate instead. Later, when the show changed its setup for the second season, Tomei was let go even though Allen wanted to keep the character — Allen had known someone like her in real life.

Not long after leaving the show, Tomei went on to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “My Cousin Vinny”. Since then, her filmography has included “Chaplin,” “The Paper,” “Slums of Beverly Hills,” “What Women Want,” and “The Wrestler.”.

Most recently, she’s become a star to a whole new generation as Peter Parker’s Aunt May in all four Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films. May died in “No Way Home,” but she returned for scenes inside Peter’s head in “Brand New Day,” which has now become the third-highest-grossing film of all time.

Lewis Left For Voice Acting

Dawnn Lewis helped write the show’s theme song and played Jaleesa for five seasons. She left “A Different World” for Hangin’, and she sang the theme song alongside Holly Robinson and En Vogue. She departed “Mr. Cooper” once the series was overhauled following its first season.

Voice work became Lewis’s new calling, and she has lent her voice to shows such as “King of the Hill,” “The Boondocks,” and “Futurama,” along with films including “Monsters University.”. She voiced the X-Men character Storm across three video games, and she also showed up in live-action films like “Dreamgirls.”.

In her most recent role, she voiced Captain Carol Freeman on “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” becoming the first Black female Captain to lead an entire run of a “Star Trek” series. The character who came before her on “Discovery,” Michael Burnham, did not receive the promotion right away.

“She returned for scenes inside Peter’s head in ‘Brand New Day,’ which has now become the third-highest-grossing film of all time.”

Guy Carried The Show Through Five Seasons

Jasmine Guy’s misfortune benefited from Bonet’s exit. The series rearranged itself to center on her character, Whitley, in Season 2. It remains her best-known role, so it’s no surprise she’ll be returning for the new series.

She appeared as a guest star on several popular shows, including “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”, before her next regular leading role came on Showtime’s “Dead Like Me,” where she played Roxy Harvey, a former cop who had become a grim reaper. She also played a witch on “The Vampire Diaries” and a fallen angel on “Touched by an Angel.”.

She made her movie debut in Spike Lee’s “School Daze” and appeared in Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Nights.” More recently, she’s starred in TV movies like “Wrapped Up in Christmas” and “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.” Guy continues to act and direct for stage productions, and she once served as Executive Director at Atlanta’s True Colors Theatre.

Tupac Shakur counted Guy among his closest friends, and Guy went on to write a biography about his mother, Afeni.

Hardison’s Movie Career

Dwayne Wayne, the character Kadeem Hardison portrayed, began as a goofy flip-up sunglasses goofball but eventually became a serious boyfriend and eventual husband to Whitley. He too will return for the new series.

After Hardison appeared in his first major film, his career took off, with roles in movies such as “Gunmen,” “Vampire in Brooklyn,” “Showtime,” and “Biker Boyz.” standing out among his credits. His most recent feature was the virtual reality-themed comedy-thriller “ClearMind,” which arrived in 2024. On television, he recently played Big Eddy in a recurring role on “Euphoria”, and he has also been a regular or recurring cast member on “The Chi,” “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” “Black Monday,” “KC Undercover,” and “Grown-ish.”.

He has also directed, picking up his skills across a small number of episodes of “A Different World.”. His first full-length film, “The Dark Party,” arrived since then.

What The Exit List Shows

The exit list reads like a map of 1990’s entertainment history. Tomei won an Oscar within years of departing. Bonet burned through tabloid headlines and a divorce before finding peace with Momoa. Lewis moved from sitcom theme songs to X-Men video games. Guy carried the show through five seasons of its best run.

The four principal performers exited the series for distinct reasons, and each took a separate path after leaving.

  1. Bonet left for getting pregnant, then divorced Kravitz and changed her name.
  2. Tomei was let go despite Allen wanting to keep her.
  3. Lewis left when “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” was retooled.
  4. Guy stayed and became the show’s lead.

The program was never simply a spinoff of “The Cosby Show.”; it grew into its own identity, a show about Black college life that operated independently. Its success set the stage for everything that came next.

The Netflix Sequel And The Return

Some of the original cast members are coming back for the Netflix sequel. Guy is playing Whitley again, and Hardison is stepping into the role of Dwayne Wayne.

It’s a chance for fans to see where these characters landed after the show ended. It’s also a reminder that the people who made “A Different World” have spent decades working in film, television, voice acting, and theater — often far from each other.

Long after the series ended, its reach endured. Tomei went on to become a mainstay of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lewis made history as the first Black woman to play Captain on a “Star Trek” show. Guy continued both acting and directing. Hardison kept landing work across film and television.

A Netflix sequel offers a return to the show that first brought them together, letting viewers see how far they’ve come since then.
