Mandy Patinkin played Jason Gideon on “Criminal Minds” for two seasons. Then he walked away. Now he says the show’s relentless violence against women is what drove him out.
Patinkin revealed the truth behind his departure in a 2012 interview with New York Magazine. He said he never saw the show’s graphic content before signing on. “The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do ‘Criminal Minds’ in the first place,” he said. “I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn’t think I would get to work in television again.”
The Role That Broke Him
Jason Gideon was a high-ranking member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit. His job was to survey and confront violent criminals, often serial killers. He also carried a heavy personal burden: the murder of his girlfriend, Sarah Jacobs, played by Moira Squier.
The character’s retirement came at the start of Season 3. Patinkin left the series in 2007, citing creative differences publicly. That changed in the 2012 interview, where he opened up about the show’s impact on him personally.
