A woman on Reddit says her best friend’s fiancée now believes she secretly wants him — after she explained, under pressure, exactly why she doesn’t.
Salt-Courage-5264 posted her account on r/AmITheAsshole, a community forum, and at the time of writing it had attracted 9,600 upvotes and 420 comments. Her question to the group was whether she had destroyed her best friend’s engagement through honesty.
For years, she has been best friends with a man named David. She claims she harbors no romantic feelings toward him. She even states he is not the kind of person she desires to be with at all.
The Dinner That Changed Everything
The OP said that when David met his fiancée, Trish, she was overjoyed. She noted a positive shift in David, and she was pleased to find out they were engaged. David went so far as to ask her to serve as his best “man” at the wedding.
OP was caught off guard by a conversation at dinner, according to her own account, after Trish and some of her wedding party asked her to join them for a meal.
“Trish and her MOH asked me if David and I ever hooked up and flat out if I was in love with him. I said we never had and that I wasn’t,” OP wrote.
More was what Trish wanted, and the queries moved from “do you like David?” to “why don’t you like David?”.
“I deflected and said he wasn’t my type but they kept pushing,” OP said. “Finally I said he’s arrogant and I don’t have the energy to feed his ego and that’s not what I want in a partner. The rest of the bridesmaids kind of laughed. Trish and her MOH got upset, so we ended the night.”
Wedding Party Fallout
Since then, things have grown uncomfortable for all involved. Within the wedding party group chat, Trish made it clear that she does not wish for OP to take part in the wedding.
OP told the group that Trish had called David an egomaniac and said she felt uncomfortable having her at the wedding. David backed Trish, and that move made things worse between OP and David.
Trish was not pleased with the discussion, according to David’s sister, who also felt that OP wanted to be with him.
The original poster questioned whether she had made a mistake by speaking up — or had instead walked straight into what she described as one of David’s manipulative traps.
Reddit Sides With OP
A great many users on Reddit took OP’s side and spoke out against how Trish handled the exchange.
“Trish cornered and interrogated you, then got mad when you gave an honest answer instead of playing along with her security test,” one person commented.
One writer put it this way: “Wow. Tell me you’re insecure without telling me you’re insecure…. I don’t see that lasting. Tell him to save money and elope then when the divorce happens he won’t be still paying off the wedding expenses. NTA.”.
Several commenters attributed Trish’s reaction to insecurity about OP’s relationship with David.
Unverified Story
The Daily Dot has not confirmed the account’s claims about these events on its own.
The story comes from the author’s own telling of what happened, posted on r/AmITheAsshole.
Only those who were present at that particular meal can truly say what kind of connection OP’s honesty cost her a place in the wedding party — or exposed a deeper problem in David and Trish’ has with the person in question.
