Zack Snyder’s Justice League runs 242 minutes. That is four hours and two minutes of Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, the Flash and Superman, assembled by director Zack Snyder as his original vision of the film before he left the production in May 2017.

What Warner Bros. Released in 2017
The theatrical Justice League was finished by Joss Whedon, who came aboard as an uncredited additional director after Snyder stepped down following the death of his daughter Autumn. Whedon wrote and directed new sequences, added a brighter, more humorous tone, and cut the runtime hard under directives from Warner Bros. Pictures. That version polarized critics and underperformed at the box office.
The Mother Boxes and Steppenwolf
The plot is a straight line. Darkseid and his Parademons once tried to invade Earth using three Mother Boxes to form “the Unity,” which would devastate the planet and xenoform it into a copy of their homeworld. An alliance of Old Gods, Amazons, Atlanteans, humanity and extraterrestrial beings stopped them, and the Boxes were hidden.
Superman’s death reactivates them. Steppenwolf, Darkseid’s disgraced lieutenant, wants back in his favor, so he comes for the Boxes. Diana Prince tells Bruce Wayne. They go recruiting.
Cyborg Is the Heart
Snyder has called Cyborg “the heart of the movie,” and Ray Fisher’s Victor Stone earns it. A former college athlete rebuilt by adaptive biomimetic alien technology after a nearly fatal car accident, he joins after Parademons kidnap his father Silas and other S.T.A.R. Labs employees. Much of his development was removed in 2017. Fisher has said the arc is emotional and allegorical of “the journey that Black people have taken in [America],” and representative of people with disabilities.

Cavill’s Superman, Completed
Henry Cavill has described this Superman as closer to finishing the arc that began with Man of Steel in 2013 — the “true” Superman of the comics. Snyder wanted a realistic arc, not a “one-dimensional Boy Scout.” Ben Affleck’s Batman seeks redemption after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, guilty over his own actions.
The case for this cut is not that it is tighter. It is that it is coherent. Cyborg has a story. Steppenwolf has a motive. The Unity means something. Four hours is the price of that coherence, and the middle stretch of recruitment pays it slowly.
What matters most is what the 2017 version lost: the heart of the film, in Snyder’s own description. This is the version that keeps it.
