Ukrainian President Zelenskyy says he spoke with President Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday he had spoken with President Donald Trump, describing the conversation as “important” and saying the two agreed to meet in New York.
In a social media post, Zelenskyy announced the meeting, casting it as decisive for Ukrainian security.
The Meeting in New York
In his post, Zelenskyy said the meeting “could change a lot” and that he and Trump “got through a lot” during their discussion. He described the conversation as “important.”
“There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelenskyy wrote.
There was no indication in the post about when the New York meeting might take place.
The Kyiv Visit
Trump’s presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, visited Kyiv earlier this month. Zelenskyy thanked Trump for that trip.
“We went through the key details thoroughly, and they saw the situation in Ukraine firsthand. The peace track is our number one priority,” Zelenskyy said.
The Peace Track
Zelenskyy added that there are “ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life.”
“We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps,” Zelenskyy wrote.
The Graham Bill
Trump’s signing of the Lindsey Graham bill into law was the final item on Zelenskyy’s remarks, and he thanked the president for it.
The measure, which takes its name from a late Republican senator, places primary and secondary sanctions upon Russia and other states that back Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.
The Closing Statement
“We all concur – there must be peace,” Zelenskyy concluded his post, thanking “everyone who stands with Ukraine.”
