Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Review: 14 Years On, Still Worth Playing

A review of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the third main game in the series, still worth playing today.

Two teams face each other across a battlefield in a tense moment of combat.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive came out in 2012 for PS3, Linux, PC and Mac. It keeps the same gun fights and team play that fans expect from the series. The game is now available on Steam and other stores.

The Core Game

The core of Global Offensive is simple: two teams fight over control points on a map. One side tries to hold the points, the other tries to break through. Matches move fast.

Gun List

The gun list is large. There are new guns added since the earlier games, along with familiar favorites from the series. Players can buy weapons during a match, and that system keeps matches from feeling fixed once the starting loadout runs out.

Match Types

There are several match types beyond the standard control-point mode. These include bomb-planting rounds and rounds built around holding a spot for a set time. Each type changes how players think about cover and positioning.

The Look

The look of Global Offensive is plain by design. Maps are open, bright and easy to read. That simplicity makes it easier to see enemies across a map, which suits the fast pace of the matches.

Sound Design

Gun sounds are loud and clear. Footsteps carry well, and players can hear a shot land before they see it. This lets players judge where danger is coming from even when vision is blocked.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer is where the game earns its keep. Matches run smoothly online, and the server system keeps matches running without pause. Rank systems reward steady play over quick wins.

What Works

  • A large, balanced gun list
  • Several match types
  • Clear sound design
  • Smooth multiplayer
  • Easy to pick up

What Falls Short

The controls can feel tight compared to newer shooters. Some maps favor certain strategies over others, which means some players find certain maps harder to enjoy than others.

Global Offensive does not try to remake the formula. Instead, it improves on it by adding new guns, new modes and better matchmaking. It holds up well against the other shooters on PC.
