A Space for the Unbound is a game about a boy who can walk into other people’s minds, and it is at its best when it remembers that a mind is a messy place to visit. Mojiken Studio’s side-scrolling adventure follows Atma and his girlfriend Raya through the last weeks of high school in a small Indonesian town. It earns its 8.5/10 by trusting small moments over spectacle.

Atma, Raya, and the Red Book
The setup is simple. Atma and Raya are about to graduate. They make a bucket list, start with a movie, and then Raya’s reality-altering powers surface. A crack opens in the sky. Atma finds a red book that lets him “space dive” into people’s minds, solving puzzles that shift how those people see their own trauma.
The game is set in the late 1990s in a suburban Indonesian town, and that setting does real work. The town is not a backdrop. It is the thing the story keeps returning to.
Kick-Ups, Stealth, and Ace Attorney
Mechanically, A Space for the Unbound is a two-dimensional side-scroller. Atma moves left or right, walks or runs, and interacts with people, objects and animals. Most of it is slow: exploring, talking, picking up objects in point-and-click puzzles.
The variety is real. Minigames include kick-ups, dodging falling objects with button inputs, and timed fight sequences. There are stealth sections and cross-examination scenes modeled on Ace Attorney. And there are cats, which the player can pet and name.
| System | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Space dive | Enter a mind, solve puzzles, shift a person’s view |
| Riftdive | Move to a different point in a location’s history to solve puzzles |
| Minigames | Kick-ups, dodging, timed fights, stealth |
| Cats | Pet and name them |
A Release That Slipped From 2020
The game arrived on January 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The release was first planned for 2020 but was delayed after allegations that a publisher had taken advantage of Mojiken Studio and Toge Productions.
Mobile followed later, on separate tracks.
| Platform | Release date |
|---|---|
| Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S | January 19, 2023 |
| iOS | April 4, 2025 |
| Android | August 10, 2026 |
Nirmala, Erik, and Admiral
The plot does not stay cozy. Atma dreams of a girl named Nirmala, who hands him the red book. He drowns in each dream trying to save her, then wakes at his desk. Raya collapses. Admiral, the couple’s adopted cat, gains the ability to speak, then is killed by a school bully named Erik.
When Atma dives into Erik’s mind, he finds an abusive upbringing. Nirmala ejects him and turns Erik into a monster. Raya restores Erik, seemingly kills him, and faints as the crack widens.
The Town Raya Rewrites
Later, Atma wakes to find Raya missing and the town preparing for a festival. Raya has altered the townspeople’s minds in retaliation for past mistreatment. With help from his classmate Lulu, Atma restores them. Raya, crushed by the pressure of organizing the festival and running from her own trauma, has been rewriting reality.
That is the game’s real subject. The supernatural threat is not the apocalypse. It is what people do to the world when they cannot face what happened to them.
Where It Stands
The magical realist setting and the emotional story carry A Space for the Unbound. It won Best Storytelling at the 2020 SEA Game Awards and was a Games for Impact nominee at The Game Awards 2023.
The slow pace will lose some players. The point-and-click puzzles and stealth sections are the weakest parts of the package.
What holds is Atma and Raya. A Space for the Unbound treats teenage grief as serious material and refuses to look away.
