Rogue Legacy 2 asks you to die, and then asks you to die again as your own child. Cellar Door Games built a sequel that treats failure as inheritance, and it lands with a 9.1/10 critic aggregate on IGDB across six outlets.

A knight, a manor, and a family of corpses
You play a knight exploring procedurally generated dungeons, collecting treasure and killing what stands in the way. Swords and shields are standard. Mages cast magic. Rogue Legacy 2 adds classes on top of that, including a Ranger who summons platforms and fires a bow, and a Barbarian who swings an axe.
Death is not the end of the run so much as the end of the character. When your avatar is killed, you start over. The gold you gathered survives, and you spend it on permanent upgrades — new weapons, gear, runes. Then you pick a random heir, each with genetic traits that either help or hurt your combat efficiency.
That is the hook, and it is a good one. Your daughter could be a Ranger. She could also be vegan. The game says so itself, and it means it.
Heirlooms buried behind special doors
The dungeons hide Heirlooms — permanent ability upgrades locked in special rooms. Finding one changes how far the next heir can go, which is the real progression in a game that keeps taking your characters away.
Rogue Legacy 2 also carries Metroidvania elements alongside its roguelite structure. The map opens up as your bloodline gets stronger, so a wall that stopped one knight may not stop the grandchild.
Cellar Door Games gives you room to choose your pace. Go hard and fast into the depths of a randomly generated world, or build a character up slowly until you are ready for more.
Early access, then a long rollout
The game arrived on Windows through early access in August 2020. The full version followed in April 2022 for Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch port came in November, and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions landed in June 2023.
That is a patient release schedule for a sequel to a 2013 game. Rogue Legacy 2 does not feel like a quick follow-up.
What the score says
Rogue Legacy 2 holds a 9.1 out of 10 on the IGDB critic aggregate across six outlets. The class additions give each run a different shape, the Heirlooms give exploration a point beyond gold, and the heir system turns every death into a small decision instead of a punishment.
The genetic traits are the sharpest idea here. Handing a player a random character with a flaw is not a gimmick — it is the whole argument of the game, that your legacy defines you and you do not get to pick it.
Rogue Legacy 2 is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
