Halo 5: Guardians splits its story between two Spartan fireteams and asks players to fight for both sides. The 2015 Xbox One shooter, developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Studios, follows Blue Team under Master Chief and Fireteam Osiris under Spartan Locke. It is a bigger, faster Halo than the one before it, and it mostly earns the scale.

Two Fireteams, One Hunt
The setup is the strongest thing here. Blue Team goes absent without leave to track down the AI Cortana, and the UNSC sends Osiris to bring Master Chief back. Locke is a former ONI assassin and tracker. Master Chief is chasing something the game lets stay personal. That tension gives the campaign a spine that Halo 4 lacked.
Blue Team and Osiris
Halo 5: Guardians takes place in 2558, eight months after Halo 4. Blue Team is composed of Spartan-IIs: Linda-058, an elite sniper; Kelly-087, a scout; and Frederic-104, a hand-to-hand specialist. Osiris is Spartan-IVs, a newer generation. Holly Tanaka is a combat technician. Olympia Vale speaks many alien dialects. Edward Buck returns from Halo 3: ODST. The roster is deep, and the game uses it.
Fireteam Orders and Revives
Every mission keeps a persistent fireteam of computer-controlled Spartans on the field. Solo players can direct them with the d-pad to grab a weapon, board a vehicle, or focus an enemy. In co-op, up to four players take those roles, each with different loadouts and attributes. Down a Spartan and they go incapacitated, not dead — a teammate can revive them. Difficulty scales to the number of human players. It is a clean system.
Sprint, Slide, Thruster
The movement is the real upgrade. Players sprint without limit, slide at top speed, and charge enemies. A thruster pack boosts speed or shifts laterally. Clambering reaches higher ground. Every weapon aims down sights, and sustained fire knocks you out of zoom. Zoom midair and you hover, then slam the ground for an area attack. The shield does not recharge in multiplayer while sprinting, which keeps fights honest.
Warzone at 24 Players
The move to Xbox One allowed Warzone, a 24-person mode built alongside traditional multiplayer. The engine adjusts resolution dynamically to hold 60 frames per second. That focus on performance cost offline and local networking, which is a real trade. The level-building tools and the spread of competitive and cooperative modes give Halo 5: Guardians unusual range.
Kamchatka and Meridian
The campaign opens with Osiris on Kamchatka, retrieving Dr. Catherine Halsey from a battle between Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant and Forerunner Prometheans. They kill ‘Mdama. Blue Team later scuttles a derelict research station when a Covenant fleet arrives. Cortana’s cryptic message sends Master Chief to Meridian, the human colony world, and Osiris follows. Supporting turns from Captain Thomas Lasky, Sarah Palmer, and the shipboard AI Roland hold the frame together.
What Holds It Back
The campaign’s weakest habit is putting the player behind Locke when the story belongs to Chief. The hunt never quite pays off the way the premise promises, and Cortana’s return raises questions the game does not answer. The multiplayer carries it. Warzone and the arena modes are where the hours go, and the 60-frame target keeps them sharp.
The Numbers
- Release year: 2015
- Developer: 343 Industries
- Publisher: Microsoft Studios
- Platform: Xbox One
- Setting: 2558, eight months after Halo 4
- Warzone: 24 players
- Units sold: five million within three months
- Score: 8.4/10
Halo 5: Guardians is the most complete multiplayer package 343 Industries has shipped, and the campaign is a solid, uneven chapter in the Master Chief saga. The shooting is fast, the fireteam tools work, and Warzone justifies the console jump. It is not the best Halo story. It is one of the better Halo games.
