Astronomers have spotted mysterious red specks of light in the sky, and they can’t agree whether they’re supermassive black holes, newborn galaxies, or something entirely new. The Webb telescope picked up these tiny pinpricks, which glow as brightly as entire galaxies, and now two groups of scientists are fighting over what they’re actually seeing.
The objects, nicknamed “little red dots,” show up again and again in Webb’s images. They’re tiny — just a pixel across — and they glow red with long-wavelength light. One team says they’re looking at the birth of supermassive black holes inside colossal stars. Another team says they’re something stranger still.
The Little Red Dots
The first hint came in 2023. Researchers pointed Webb at the objects and found they were blindingly bright, shining as brightly as a whole galaxy. They span just a pixel and show up in almost every image the telescope takes.
At first, the dots looked like galaxies. Then researchers noticed they looked more like supermassive black holes at the hearts of galaxies. Those black holes are dark, but their gravity pulls in gas and other matter, creating glowing rings of hot, swirling material that outshine the stars around them.
The Two Strangest Dots
Then came the spring of 2025. Two teams of astronomers, working independently, announced observations of a pair of little red dots that were unlike anything seen before. The dots were exceptionally red, with almost no light in the bluer hues of their spectra.
Anna de Graaff, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, led one group. Rohan Naidu, an astronomer at the University of Hawai’i, co-led another group. Both teams used Webb to study the dots in detail.
The Spectrum That Changed Everything
The key evidence came from the dots’ spectra — the detailed breakdown of which colors of light they emit. The spectra showed that the colors of hydrogen were smeared across multiple shades. That’s a telltale sign of a black hole.
When you look straight at an exposed black hole, the hydrogen clouds whipped around it emit slightly different colors depending on their speed. The result is a wide range of colors called a broad line. The wider the line, the faster the fastest hydrogen clouds are moving — and the more massive the black hole.
Many astronomers concluded that big black holes dotted the universe, washing out the light of the stars in their host galaxies. The dots appeared red because dust blocked their blue light.
But the dots still seemed odd. Most supermassive black holes flicker as they gulp down streams of gas and beam powerful X-rays across the universe. The little red dots seemed to be doing neither.
The Two Teams’ Different Ideas
The two teams aren’t agreeing on what they’re seeing. One group thinks the dots are the birth of supermassive black holes inside colossal stars. The other group proposes a new kind of object altogether.
Naidu argued that Webb is witnessing the formation of supermassive black holes inside the cores of enormous stars. “There is a fundamentally new phenomenon afoot,” he said.
Not everyone buys it. The field has gotten very polarized, according to Anna-Christina Eilers, an astrophysicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who studies little red dots.
What the Debate Means
The disagreement has sparked a flurry of follow-up research. The fight is ongoing, and the answer isn’t in yet.
The Webb telescope is still gathering data, and the little red dots are still being studied. The debate will continue until one explanation wins out — or until something even stranger emerges.
For now, the little red dots remain a mystery. They’re bright, they’re red, and they keep showing up in Webb’s images. Whether they’re black holes, galaxies, or something else entirely, the answer isn’t in yet.
