Chipotle is bringing its Margaritas back to select cities, and the rollout reads as a full-on Halloween marketing stunt dressed as a menu item. The fast-casual chain announced a five-city “Summon the Spirits Tour” today, with $6 margaritas hitting one location per weekend in October. The drinks are made with premium tequila, triple sec, citrus juice, agave nectar, and a lime wedge — and the whole thing is designed to build anticipation for the chain’s annual Boorito promotion, which returns on Halloween.

For a limited time, the tour makes five stops: Denver, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New Orleans. Fans have spent years requesting the return of Chipotle’s Margaritas on social media, and the company has finally responded with a popup-style event that features Halloween decor, interactive experiences, and Chipotle prizes.

The Five Cities on the Tour

The schedule runs every Friday and Saturday in October:

  1. Denver, Colorado, Oct. 2-3, 3 p.m.-9 p.m. local time, 2760 S. Colorado Blvd.
  2. New York, New York, Oct. 9-10, 3 p.m.-9 p.m., 185 Montague St., Brooklyn, NY
  3. Dallas, Texas, Oct. 16-17, 3 p.m.-9 p.m., 2401 Victory Park Lane, Dallas
  4. Los Angeles, California, Oct. 23-24, 3 p.m.-9 p.m., 7660 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles
  5. New Orleans, Louisiana, Oct. 30-31, 3 p.m.-9 p.m., 2801 Magazine St., New Orleans

The tour runs through the month, and each stop brings its own Chipotle restaurant, serving margaritas for a single weekend. The timing is planned to build momentum before Halloween, when Boorito’s traditional offers draw customers in.

Why the Margarita Left the Menu

Margaritas first appeared at many Chipotle locations throughout the early 2010s. The company started scaling back by 2018. At present, only 50% of locations sell alcohol, and that figure keeps shrinking as more restaurants let their liquor licenses expire rather than renew them.

Availability of liquor depends on where you live, since state and local laws govern it, so getting alcohol isn’t always possible at fast-casual restaurants across the board. Several chains sell drinks at some of their spots, including Shake Shack, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, and Freebirds World Burrito.

During the early 2000s, numerous eating places served spirits, and by 2010, Chipotle’s yearly report stated that most restaurants offered beer and margaritas. In 2013, the firm brought out a Patrón Margarita made-to-order with top-tier tequila and fresh juices at most of its outlets. That very year, sales of beer and margaritas accounted for up to 2% of revenue and pushed up average checks and evening trade.

The Brand Marketing Pitch

Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing Stephenie Perdue framed the revival as a response to fan demand. “Fans never stopped talking about our margaritas after they left the menu, so Halloween felt like the perfect time to revive a Chipotle classic,” she said in a statement.

She added: “For five weekends, we’re giving fans the chance to rediscover the iconic Chipotle Margarita, made with just five real ingredients and the same simplicity we bring to our food.”

This limited-time deal is connected to the popup tour, with the $6 price point being its main feature. The company has not announced any plans for keeping the margaritas on the menu once the tour comes to an end.

Menu Innovation and the Beverage Push

Chipotle is stepping up its menu innovation efforts in an attempt to bring customers back and boost sales. Back in July, CEO Scott Boatwright revealed the company’s plans to introduce more side items alongside two additional limited-time protein offerings. The chain is also expanding its beverage selection, a category he described as the fastest-growing in the industry.

“There’s significant opportunity in beverage, and we are running down a path today to really capitalize on what’s happening in beverage,” Boatwright said.

“We have expanded the team on culinary to address this challenge of driving thoughtful menu innovation — not just pantry items, but new news. We’re running down center-of-the-plate items. We have teams working on beverage, on sides, on desserts. We’ve stage-gated some really big ideas that have merit and that you could see on the calendar maybe back half of ’26 but certainly in 2027.”

This particular promotion works as both a limited-time drink offer and a branded event, complete with Halloween-themed decorations and Chipotle prizes. The margarita tour fits that strategy.

The Experience and the Value Proposition

A single visit to this popup location is more than a drink — it’s a temporary destination for a weekend event that gives guests a reason to arrive without delay. The margaritas are built from familiar ingredients, and the $6 cost places them firmly in the category of a good deal rather than a costly treat.

Beyond promising Chipotle prizes, the chain has offered no details on what those rewards contain. For a popup to succeed, the drinks must taste good, the decor must hold interest, and the prizes must be worth chasing.

Chipotle’s margarita promotion in October works toward a larger goal: building up interest in Boorito, which comes back on Halloween with an in-restaurant entrée offer. The drink deal functions as a way to direct attention toward the brand’s yearly tradition before it arrives.

The tour wraps up at the end of October, with its closing stretch falling on Halloween. This places the margarita promotion right before Boorito’s return, which brings back its in-restaurant entrée offer on the holiday.
