This week, Discord launched a global age-check system that guesses users’ ages without reading their messages. The platform now sorts users into adult, teen, and unconfirmed categories, replacing the manual confirmation process many users expected.
Discord announced in February it would expand age assurance globally, though the company later pushed the rollout back to the second half of 2026. The delay was described as a chance to offer more verification choices, make its vendors more open about their work, and share more technical details about the system.
How Discord guesses your age
Discord’s new system estimates users’ ages automatically. The platform’s model looks at signals tied to an account, including connected communities, servers, and games, plus how many channels or servers the user is active in and how long the account has existed.
According to the firm, the system refrains from examining messages, calls, or any other content to determine age. Neither a solitary server, a community, nor a friend possesses the authority to decide which group an individual is placed in.
Users fall into one of three categories:
- Adult Age Group for those 18 and older
- Teen Age Group for users between 13 and 17
- Unconfirmed when Discord lacks enough information to decide
Discord says its age estimation system, which works much like Google and YouTube’s, is not guaranteed to be accurate every time. If a user thinks they have been put in the wrong category, they can do it themselves.
Most users are not expected to require additional age confirmation, according to the company.
Verification methods grow
In addition to the previously announced facial age estimation and ID scanning, which are still part of the package, the rollout adds a number of new ways to prove you are an adult. The options now available to users vary by both region and device.
Among the ways to prove your age are a credit card, the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, Google Wallet, AgeKey, a video selfie, and an ID scan.
To confirm that an adult owns and has authorized the card, card information goes through k-ID and then to Stripe for verification. Discord says it and k-ID both avoid taking in the card details. During the verification process, Stripe might temporarily place a small charge on the card, which Discord says will be refunded within 14 business days.
Discord receives a user’s age range from Apple App Store and Google Play verification without getting their exact birthdate. Google Wallet instead verifies age through an existing passport-based ID pass, currently supporting Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, and US.
Users can build a credential tied to their age that works across services that support AgeKey.
Users don’t need to confirm their age just to keep using Discord. Additional confirmation is required when someone hasn’t been classified as an adult but wants to access age-restricted content, spaces, or settings.
Teen accounts get extra protections
Teen accounts are still able to message friends, join voice calls, and join non-age-restricted servers, though a number of safeguards apply.
Messages from people who aren’t friends go to the Message Requests inbox. Discord displays an alert before teens accept certain friend requests from people with whom they don’t share mutual friends or a small server.
Age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands are off limits to teen accounts. Sensitive images, meanwhile, can be blurred or blocked.
Only friends and members of smaller shared servers can see profile details, activity, and the game being played.
Discord treats unconfirmed accounts the same way it treats teen accounts, offering them the same protections, until the platform can estimate the account holder’s age or until the user confirms they are an adult.
Discord says Unconfirmed users keep full profile and activity data visible to friends and users in all shared servers, instead of having the more limited visibility that Teen accounts receive.
People who have already confirmed their age do not need to go through the process again. The age group they were previously placed in stays with them as they move to the new system.
The rollout this week
This week, the rollout is rolling out, and it might take days for everyone to see their classification in the Account Status section of User Settings.
The system’s reliance on signals rather than content is a notable shift. The verification methods on offer are a mixed bag: Stripe’s temporary charge is a small nuisance, but the refund promise covers it. AgeKey offers a reusable credential, which is a genuine improvement over one-time scans.
The real question is whether the age estimation holds up. Discord admits the model will not always get it right, and users who believe they have been incorrectly categorized can confirm their age manually.
This week, the rollout is happening, and it may take several days before every user sees their classification in User Settings under Account Status.
